Job overview

The stroke unit at Chesterfield Royal is a 35 bedded unit, consisting of a mixture of hyper acute, acute and rehabilitation beds. Initial first assessments of stroke patient’s takes place in our emergency department where our stroke clinical nurses specialist provide an assessment to determine the pathway of care a patient requires.

 Patients then require prompt transfer to our Hyper Acute Stroke Unit within a short time frame to receive lifesaving and the are closely monitored and continue to receive level 2 ( 1 nurse to 2 patient) care within their first 72 hours of admission. 

This role is a development post to be supported to achieve the stroke competencies to enable you to work independently and as part of a wider team to competently and confidently assess acute stroke patients and ensure the correct pathway is followed.

Supernumerary time will be given in the first few weeks until competencies have been achieved with support from the current clinical nurse specialist and Stroke Sisters.

The role will require flexible working to cover days, nights and weekends.

7.    Quality of care and standards.  Monitor and improve quality care indicators relevant to our unit.

 

8.    Enact policy and procedures. Keep up date and develop new ones as required.

9.    Demonstrate effective and efficient control of human and material resources.

 

10. Professional development of self/others.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • ● 1st level RGN
  • ● Experience within Stroke
  • ● Experience within hyper acute stroke care and treatment
  • ● NIHSS Stroke Assessment Certificate
  • ● STARS certificate completion
Desirable criteria
  • ● Degree in Stroke
  • ● Leadership training/Qualification
  • ● Completed Stroke competencies/working towards

Experience

  • ● Significant experience within stroke and hyper acute stroke care
  • ● Significant experience in managing acute Medical patients
