Job overview

The appointment is for a Locum Consultant in General Surgery within our friendly and well-established Surgical Specialties Division at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. There will be opportunity to work with colleagues in the development of new and effective patient care pathways in a department which strives to provide excellent services.

This post is designed to support the existing provision of upper gastrointestinal surgery, as well as developing the provision of laparoscopic surgery for benign upper gastrointestinal diseases.

Key aspects of the role will include development of emergency services as well as provision of surgical ambulatory care, emergency Upper GI surgery (including hot gall bladder lists) and support for the general on-call rota. There will be a requirement for the post holder to be involved in emergency care.

You will have the opportunity to discuss personal aspirations and any on-going training requirements which we would look to support and facilitate as part of your continuing professional development whilst in the role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCS
  • GMC registered with a licence to practice

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Skilled in laparoscopic procedures.
  • Experience in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery.
  • Skilled in endoscopic investigations and interventions
  • Broad clinical experience in Emergency General Surgery including acute laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration sufficient to function on the Consultant General Surgical Emergency rota.
  • Quality/audit project experience
  • Clinical supervision experience/skills
  • JAG accreditation for Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
  • Sound knowledge of NHS and Local Authority structures and systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in management of complex hiatal hernia and motility disorders including laparoscopic interventions.
  • Experience in laparoscopic exploration of bile ducts
  • Experience in complex hiatal hernia repairs (both laparoscopic and open)
  • Previous experience of using online patient record system e.g. SystmOne.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to undertake training/mentoring of clinical staff and enthusiasm for education.
