NHS Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) is the health statutory body for the Derby City and Derbyshire population. ICSs are partnerships of health and care organisations that come together to plan and deliver joined-up services and to improve the health of people who live and work in their area. Serving a total population of 1,053,000 with a budget of over £1.6 billion the ICB has a staff base of approximately 500 people.

There's never been a more important time to work in communications in the NHS. From its famed resilience during the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic, to its post-pandemic challenges on waiting times, workforce and emergency services pressure, the NHS has an important story to tell.

 As the Internal Communications Manager, working within a fast paced and busy communications and engagement team, you will perform a crucial role helping staff to understand the role and priorities of Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board as well as supporting the executive team to embed the recently refreshed vision and values.

 The successful candidate will have a fantastic opportunity to lead the internal communications function developing, delivering and evaluating the implementation of the internal communications strategy.

You will have strong managerial skills, writing abilities and be excellent at organising your time and priorities. You will lead a small team of highly skilled professionals to produce all the key internal communications for staff including running the staff forums and newsletters and leading on communicating the work of a number of portfolio areas across the ICB.

NHS experience is not essential but we're looking for someone who can use their high levels of creativity to drive our staff engagement and start to connect with our workforce in new and innovative ways. As the Internal Communications Manager you will oversee the implementation of the internal communications strategy leading a small team to ensure high quality information is available for staff throughout a variety of staff networks and channels.

 You will work with and advise senior ICB colleagues on strategic communications and related issues and play a key role in issues management and planning. You will take shared editorial responsibility for the organisation's websites, and other corporate communications tools such as newsletters, and bulletins.

Management responsibilities are also required and the person must take a lead in the co-ordination of training, development and recruitment activity across the Team. They must be able to manage staff, undertaking appraisals and recruitment including progressing any disciplinary or capability issues, as necessary.

Project planning is a key part of this role and the post holder must be able to contribute to the strategic planning of team projects, identifying interdependencies, potential impacts on the wider organisation, resource requirements and build in contingency and adjustments as necessary. You will also need to manage budgets.

You will work with colleagues to commission research and insight gathering and support the planning and delivery of engagement events across the ICB.

·       Support the Integrated Care Board to develop and deliver a range of communications strategies for the ICB

·       Develop, implement and evaluate the ICB’s internal communications strategy

·       Play a key role in issues management and planning proactive communications

 ·       Take shared editorial responsibility for the organisations websites, and other corporate communications tools such as newsletters, and bulletins

 ·       Contribute to the development of the capability, capacity and content of the ICB’s Intranet to support the increased uptake and usage by staff

·       Commission, write, edit and proofread coordinate complex internal, external publications, patient leaflets and advice documents; press releases and articles

·       Support the management of the reputation of the organisation

·       Lead in the development, implementation and evaluation of a range of communications projects, including events, campaigns, support to engagement and consultations and other high profile issues

·       Ensure all communications and engagement work is inclusive, values difference and promotes diversity; ensuring specific arrangements are put in place to engage with those groups and/or individuals that are seldom heard

·       Represent the communications and engagement team on Quality Innovation Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) programmes to include attendance at workstream meetings, project implementation groups and other groups as agreed

·       Work with engagement and involvement colleagues to ensure that engagement and consultation programmes and general Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) activities have a communications thread throughout to ensure consistency of messages

·       Support the messaging to staff regarding the development of Integrated Care System (ICS) and “Place” ensuring that there is consistent understanding across the ICB

·       Forge strong relationships with provider and other communication and engagement teams across the health and care system to engender shared understanding and consistency of the communications approach

·       Work with colleagues to ensure the consistency of communications and messaging to Governing Bodies and the wider membership to include a detailed, multi-channel membership engagement strategy, working in collaboration with GB Chair(s), place leads and other clinicians

·       Contribute to the development of staff feedback mechanisms and the potential for staff forums or similar representative groups as part of the organisational development plan

·       Advise senior ICB colleagues on strategic communications and related issues

·       Work with colleagues to commission research & insight gathering, printing/advertising/surveys/ annual reports

·       Support the planning and delivery of engagement events across the ICB such as practice engagement events, staff development events, AGMs etc. and provide advice on how to produce high quality patient information;

·       Manage budgets as appropriate

·       Manage the use of the NHS corporate identity and taking local responsibility for the NHS brand
