Job overview

We are looking for a Head of equality, Diversity and Inclusion to join our Trust. You will be an exceptional leader with passion, energy and the experience to support our strategic ambitions and help continue to develop a culture of belonging, equity and cultural improvement.

 

Reporting directly to the Director of People, OD and Inclusion, we are seeking someone who has the ability to effectively network and manage stakeholders as well as provide constructive challenge and speak truth to power. You will be a subject matter expert in equity, diversity and inclusion, but as a key member of our senior management team, also have strong leadership and engagement skills.

Main duties of the job

You will champion new ways of thinking and hearing the voices of our people and local population to improve equitable, diverse and inclusive experiences for all.

 

We have the support from the top of the organisation through our Chief Executive, executive team and wider Board. This role is fundamental to creating innovative approaches to diversity and inclusion which will support our work at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

 

You must have significant experience of delivering and co-ordinating EDI programmes in complex and challenging environments including advising at executive level and in depth knowledge of the provisions of current equality legislation. You must also have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to engage with stakeholders at all levels to influence, persuade and resolve difficult situations.

Our Trust provides mental health, learning disability and autism services across Derby and Derbyshire, alongside services for children and young people in Derby and southern Derbyshire. We also offer a range of specialist services including substance misuse, gambling harms and eating disorders services. We have a strong organisational identity and are very proud of our values-led approach to healthcare.

 

This role sits within our People and inclusion team who are responsible for offering a strategic professional HR service to the Trust supporting all divisions and departments. The team consists of Divisional People Leads, Strategic Recruitment and Reward, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Organisational Development, Workforce Planning, Roster and Medical staffing.

 

Transactional day to day Human Resource services are delivered through a shared people services function (Joint Venture) with Derbyshire Community Health Services (DCHS).

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Human Resource Management or equivalent professional qualification or equivalent level of experience.
  • Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management or relevant area or equivalent level of experience.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development to demonstrate specialist knowledge in equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of delivering and co-ordinating EDI programmes in complex and challenging environments including advising at executive level.
  • Experience of working and/or advising a wide range of senior stakeholders in the delivery of the equality and diversity agenda and compliance with the Public Sector Equality Duty in a healthcare or equivalent setting
  • Substantial HR experience operating at a senior level in the NHS or large public or private sector organisation – in an EDI role including working in partnership with diverse stakeholder communities, other agencies, and Trade Unions both internally and externally.
  • Experience in supporting and advising on the development of complex, sensitive policies/procedures.
  • In depth knowledge of the provisions of current equality legislation, including its practical implications and best practice, with a proven track record of applying this within a complex environment.
  • Proven track record of creating change policy and practice, including developing and implementing equality and inclusion policies, schemes, action plans and publicity information and implementing strategies.
  • Experience of designing and delivering outcome-focused Equality training and resources
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of designing, implementing and evaluating equality impact assessment methodology and systems.
