Job overview
We are looking to recruit a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Biochemistry Team at the Derby site of Derbyshire Pathology.
Consideration will be given to those who are working towards obtaining their HCPC registration on an Annex 21 contract.
We have full UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation and are accredited with the IBMS as a training laboratory for both registration and specialist portfolios.
Based in the Biochemistry section of the laboratory, you will help to deliver technical excellence; attention to detail and a professional attitude in this busy department are crucial.
Our modern laboratories are equipped with Roche Cobas 8100 automated workflow system and ISE, c702 and e801 units; Sebia Capillarys and Hydrasys systems as well as Phadia Immunocap.
We are inviting applications from candidates who are highly motivated, proactive and enthusiastic to join a friendly and well-motivated team.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be trained and competency assessed to join the 24/7 shift system; carrying out night, late, early, weekend and bank holiday shifts.
Experience and/or ability to work autonomously for long periods of time at varying start and finish times is essential. In the absence of experience, a commitment to proactively work towards this and an awareness of the requirements is needed.
Key elements of the role involve undertaking day to day sample processing using both automated and manual platforms, and authorisation of clinical results in order to maintain agreed KPI’s and the supervision of support staff.
In addition, you will be involved in service development including quality management activities and various projects, so an aptitude with Microsoft Office programs is preferable. Experience of using Q-Pulse would be an advantage.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience working in an NHS Automated Blood Sciences laboratory within the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
- Recent experience working in Biochemistry
- Experience of QMS Activities and awareness of UKAS/ISO15189
- Experience of using current pathology IT systems (Winpath, Infinity)
- Experience with Roche Cobas 8000 Automated equipment
- Experience with specialist chemistry equipment (Sebia Capillarys, Hydrasys, Phadia Immunocap)
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Understanding of good laboratory practice and laboratory health and safety
Desirable criteria
- Basic understanding of biochemistry tests and their clinical significance
Physical Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to work flexibly on a 24/7 shift rota
- Ability to use a range of analytical laboratory equipment e.g. VDUs, centrifuges, balances, pipettes
