Job overview

Are you passionate about Blood Transfusion, and looking for the next exciting step in your career? Would you like to work at busy hospitals in Derby and Burton, within easy access of the Peak District National Park?

Derbyshire Pathology are seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, and conscientious manager with the ability to lead the Blood Transfusion service at the Derby and Burton sites. As Blood Transfusion Manager you will provide professional knowledge, guidance, leadership and training to Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists and Pathology support staff and work closely with a team of Transfusion Practitioners.

The successful candidate will have HCPC-registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with evidence of Continued Professional Development and significant exposure to Blood Transfusion science management. A master's degree in biomedical science is a requirement of this post; Fellowship of the IBMS and a management qualification would also be advantageous.

Main duties of the job

This is a key leadership role which will require close working with the Chesterfield site of Derbyshire Pathology to ensure that the sharing of good practice is continued and developed. You will be responsible for the Blood Transfusion service at the Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Hospital Burton, providing leadership and management to the Blood Transfusion departments.

The Derby and Burton sites both support 24/7 services that cover emergency departments and clinical haematology services on both sites, alongside intensive care units, surgical and general medical wards as well as busy obstetrics departments. Our modern blood transfusion laboratories are well equipped with 2 x Bio-Rad IH1000 analysers, Comark temperature monitoring system and Clinisys Winpath Enterprise LIMS on the Derby site and 2 x Ortho Vision analysers, Kelsius temperature monitoring system and Meditiech LIMS on the Burton site.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC registration
  • MSc Biomedical science/ Higher Specialist diploma blood transfusion or equivalent/ working towards completion
  • Fellowship of IBMS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant supervisory experience in an NHS Blood Transfusion laboratory
  • Proficient in technical and scientific techniques in Blood Transfusion
  • Evidence of participation in UKAS and MHRA inspections

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive knowledge of Blood Transfusion science
  • Knowledge of requirements for UKAS accreditation and MHRA compliance
