Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Hepatologist to join our University of Derby and Burton Hospitals (UHDB) team of 5 Hepatology consultants and 6 specialist nurses.


The successful candidate will also work closely with our 14 luminal gastroenterologists in providing a 24/7 gastroenterology and liver service including a daily inpatient endoscopy list and endoscopy nurse supported out of hours GI bleed service. 


This is a full-time position, but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job-share are encouraged to apply. If a part-time or job-share person is appointed modification of the job content will be discussed with the appointee on a personal basis. Informal visits are welcomed. 

Main duties of the job

Hepatology services are primarily based at the Royal Derby Hospital site, which is a level 2 liver centre. In 2023, the service achieved level 2 (full) IQILS (Improving Quality of Liver Services) accreditation. The assessment team highlighted several areas of excellence in the service. The unit is a tertiary referral centre for PTC and TIPSS and works closely with the Liver transplant unit in Birmingham in caring for patients pre and post liver transplantation. 


 Luminal and Hepatology services are provided on 2 separate dedicated wards at Royal Derby Hospital (RDH) and on 1 ward at Queens Hospital Burton (QHB).  At RDH the Hepatology service is supported by 6 Clinical Nurse Specialists including 2 Viral Hepatitis, 2 Hepatology, and 2 HPB cancer nurse Specialists, together with alcohol liaison service.  
We have excellent endoscopy facilities which are all JAG accredited this includes a 3-room endoscopy suite at QHB and a 2-room endoscopy suite at SRP. We participate in the national bowel cancer screening programme across the Acute Hospitals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust serves Southern Derbyshire, East Staffordshire and some parts of adjoining areas; Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire.


We are looking to appoint an additional full-time Consultant Hepatologist. The successful applicant will join the existing vibrant and dynamic team of 5 Hepatologists and 14 Luminal Gastroenterologists at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. This post is suitable for StRs acquiring CCT or established consultants looking to subspecialise within a large department.   


 Hepatology services are primarily based at the Royal Derby Hospital site, which is a level 2 liver centre. Our endoscopy unit at the Royal Derby Hospital is a modern, 7 room facility, recently entirely re-equipped with the latest HD instruments.  We perform over 20,000 procedures annually, including a range of specialist diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: colonoscopy; large polyp EMR; ERCP and EUS. There is a dedicated in-patient Endoscopy list 7 days per week, and we are well supported in radiology with 3 outstanding specialist GI radiologists and an on-call interventional radiology service. We are the lead Bowel Screening Unit in Southern Derbyshire with JAG accreditation.  


 The medical assessment unit (MAU) is staffed by a team of acute physicians who conduct the post-take rounds.  The medical take is supported by a consultant on-call for each medical specialty 24/7 including Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Medicine for the Elderly, Nephrology, Stroke and Gastroenterology/Hepatology.  The post holder will primarily be on call for gastroenterology and GI bleeds only. 
 The Graduate Entry Medical School (Nottingham University) is on site at Royal Derby Hospital and this post has a teaching commitment. There are also many opportunities for research, including participation in CLRN portfolio studies.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Possession of MRCP
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice at date of Commencement OR within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview OR If applying for Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice simultaneously with a CESR application, supporting documentary evidence must be provided at interview, to confirm an application has been submitted & is under consideration by the GMC
Desirable criteria
  • Additional higher medical / scientific degree relevant to the specialty

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of sub-speciality learning in Hepatology
Desirable criteria
  • Subspecialty accreditation in Hepatology (CCT) / completion of Hepatology ATP post
  • Experience of or desire to train in EUS

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development & the requirements of clinical governance

  • Attended a management course for consultants

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
