An exciting opportunity has arisen for three substantive Consultants in Emergency Medicine to join our friendly, enthusiastic Emergency Department team at University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), based at the Royal Derby Hospital site.

These are substantive posts and any candidate who wishes to work less than full time will be considered and supported, taking into account service needs. 

The RDH Emergency Department currently operates over three areas – Red Adult ED, Green Adult ED and a Blue Urgent Treatment Centre to provide excellent care for the patients in our community.

We are recruiting for 3 substantive posts, 2 of which will be 50:50 split AED:CED. 

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to, & training of your staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines & acting in accordance with them.
  • Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & continuing medical education activity locally, regionally & nationally as appropriate.
  • Provision of an out of hours’ service with your Consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments, as indicated in the enclosed job plan.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standard in the management of patients presenting to the emergency department.
  • to work with the ED paediatric lead consultant and other colleagues to provide quality care and cover for paediatric patients in the children's ED.
  • to share with colleagues responsibility for the day to day management of the ED as well as service development and speciality interfacing

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • Evidence of entry on GMC Specialist Register; OR Have CCT or be within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview AND entry on GMC Specialist Register by date of commencement; OR Evidence that the GMC is processing the Specialist Registration application (MUST be provided prior to interview)
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • ATLS/ETC & ALS certification
  • APLS or PALS certification
Desirable criteria
  • MIMMS/HMIMMS Instructor status
  • Further higher qualification relevant to the specialty
  • Subspecialty qualification in Acute Medicine

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad range of relevant experience in Emergency Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Subspecialty interest/experience

Management Experience

Desirable criteria
  • Management training on an accredited course

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Formal Appraisal & Educational/Clinical Supervisor skills

  • Formal training in educational methodology

Audit & Research Experience

  • Experience of audit in practice

  • Evidence of recent research & development activity relevant to specialty
