Job overview

The Costing Accountant is a financial expert providing accurate and timely  cost information to Divisional colleagues and NHS England in line with local and national costing guidance, standards and timelines.

The role will contribute to the Trust's annual comprehensive National Cost Collection (NCC), submission, which informs a number of work streams including the PLICS portal, the model hospital, getting it right first time (GIRFT) programme and the NHS payments scheme prices.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the ongoing development and maintenance of the Trust’s Costing Processes and Costing System, working closely with Information and Divisional Teams, and all other areas of the Finance Department, in order to produce accurate Costing and Service Line Management information for Mandatory Cost Submissions and to inform Trust decision making at all levels.

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Technician Accountancy qualification or equivalent knowledge
  • Experience in Financial Management, Costing or Financial Services
Desirable criteria
  • Studying towards CCAB qualification

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the Local and National key financial policies: Standing Financial Instructions, Standing Orders, Budgetary Control Policy and Establishment control policies.
  • Knowledge of the wider NHS financial regime, current NHS payment regime and NCC/PLICS Costing.
  • Experience of working in a finance setting
  • Working with computerized financial systems
  • Experience of dealing with high volumes of complex, incomplete data
  • Knowledge of the key operational and financial challenges facing the NHS.
  • Personal credibility, working with staff at all levels to build constructive relationships and shared goals
  • Highly computer literate, knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications
  • Experience of working to conflicting and tight deadlines
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of PAS Systems and data collections
  • Experience of working with a PLICS costing system
