Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive consultant in Nephrology to join our friendly, enthusiastic team at University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB). This is a substantive position at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust based at Royal Derby Hospital with the expectation that cross-site working in Burton and Lichfield may also be needed.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for the care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to, & training of your staff.
- Responsible for maintaining awareness of professional guidelines & acting in accordance with them.
- Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & continuing medical education activity locally, regionally & nationally as appropriate.
- Provision of an out of hours’ service with your Consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments, as indicated in the enclosed job plan.

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS/MBCh or equivalent & possess MRCP or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
- Specialist Registration or eligible for entry on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Nephrology and General (Internal) Medicine (or equivalent) at time of interview
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree e.g MD or PhD
- Postgraduate thesis
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- 5 year supervised training in an appropriate StR equivalent training programme, together with a high standard of clinical skill & expertise in Nephrology and general medicine
- Comprehensive technical competence in Nephrology
- • Proficient in renal procedures, in particular, biopsy of native and transplant kidneys, and insertion of tunnelled dialysis catheters
Desirable criteria
- Experience at consultant level in renal medicine
- Proficiency or experience in percutaneous insertion of peritoneal dialysis catheters
Teaching / Audit
Essential criteria
- Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
- Experience of audit management
