Job overview
You will be joining a friendly and supportive Rheumatology Departments which provides comprehensive Rheumatology services for Derby and Burton together with South Derbyshire/ East Staffordshire & some parts of adjoining areas of Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire. There is dedicated therapy team and CNS team supporting consultants. There is a well thought of undergraduate and post graduate training programmes with plenty of opportunity to get involved in teaching. The Rheumatology department has Specialised Commissioning status and has well established MDTs with various teams within the Trust such as respiratory medicine, renal medicine. Consultants are encouraged to develop specialist interest.
There is also the opportunity, should the applicant wish, to work as part of the Acute Medicine Team managing patients on the Same Day Emergency Care and Medical Admissions Unit at University Hospitals of Derby & Burton NHS Foundation Trust, including patients referred by their GP, the Emergency Department or by other specialties.
Main duties of the job
1: Rheumatology: Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive Rheumatology and service to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton & surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of illness, & the proper functioning of the department
2: Acute Medicine: The provision of general medical services for the Trust, mainly based on the Medical Assessment Unit, Ambulatory Care Centre, and Short Stay wards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties & responsibilities of the post:
Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive Rheumatology and service to University Hospitals of Derby and Burton & surrounding areas, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis & treatment of illness, & the proper functioning of the department.
Responsibility for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to, & training of your staff
Provision of cover for your consultant colleagues during reasonable periods of leave, including care of patients & supervision of junior doctors. (A minimum of 6 weeks' notice is to be given for all leave requests).
Any responsibility which relates to a special interest.
Responsibility for the professional supervision & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate & continuing medical education activity, locally & nationally as appropriate
Participation in the clinical governance arrangements of the Trust & specifically within the Business Unit including clinical audit & research
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS/MBCH & possess MRCP or equivalent
- Eligible for entry on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Rheumatology at time of interview (or Portfolio Pathway/CESR)
- Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree / MD / PhD
- Postgraduate thesis
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- 5-year supervised training in an appropriate SpR training programme or equivalent, together with a high standard of clinical skill & expertise in Rheumatology
- Evidence of ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinlary team & share clinical responsibilities
Management & Administrative Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of audit management
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates.
- Commitment to participate in induction/appraisal of junior medical staff
