Assistant Director for Data, Digital Innovation and AI

NHS AfC: Band 8d

Job overview

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust (SWAST) are going through an exciting transformation in how we use data and technology innovation to support our patients and colleagues.

We’re in the early stages of delivering a new strategy that requires significant transformation of our data and innovation services and are looking for an outstanding leader to join us on that journey.

As the Assistant Director of Data, Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) you will lead a team of around 30 colleagues to deliver significant change using market-leading technologies.  You will have the drive, ambition and compassion to inspire colleagues across the South West of England and enable them to provide the best possible care for our patients.

Experience of Ambulance Services and NHS is helpful but not essential.  More importantly you’ll be highly experienced in the fields of data (including engineering, business intelligence, data science), innovation (including Artificial Intelligence) and be an expert in partnering with stakeholders and users to create a fantastic user experience.

Main duties of the job

Provide outstanding and compassionate leadership to a team of around 30 colleagues, setting clear and stretching objectives and nurturing their professional development.

Oversee delivery of our Data and Innovation Strategies – encompassing complex transformation across multiple projects in parallel

Maintain successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders up to Board level

Manage day-to-day operational services for data and innovation, ensuring that critical services and regular outputs are produced on-time with sufficient resilience and scalability

Guide the development of new data and innovation solutions using leading technologies

Uphold data quality and assurance for the Trust by building and deploying a governance framework

Enhance data literacy across the Trust and South West region, ensuring a single version of truth and enabling users to achieve maximum benefit for our solutions

Actively contribute to regional and national initiatives through integration, interoperability and sharing of critical data between NHS organisations, while ensuring the security and governance of our patient’s data

Drive thought-leadership in the use of new, innovative technologies and solutions including Artificial Intelligence, Robotic Process Automation and Machine Learning

Working for our organisation

Working for us is an experience like no other.  We provide emergency and urgent care, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, operating across the largest ambulance region in England of 10,000 square miles and responding to an average of 2,650 incidents every day.

We remain committed to ensuring that we provide the best possible care for all our patients, which is reflected in our new five-year strategy which has continually improving patient care at its very core.

At the heart of our beautiful and diverse region we employ over 6000 people and are supported by over 575 volunteers.

If you embody our values of one team, compassionate and innovative and are looking to make a real difference to peoples’ lives, then we would love to hear from you.

In return we will equip you with the skills, resources and development you need to thrive in your role.

You will have opportunities to progress to roles at a higher pay grade and enjoy continuous professional development.
