Clinical Teaching Fellow in Acute Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

This is an excellent opportunity to work in our Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP). We are a tertiary referral centre for multiple medical and surgical specialities and we are linked with a tertiary trauma centre serving the South West population. You will be joining a team of 8 Consultants, 4-5 Acute Medicine Registrars, Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs), approximately 10-12 Core trainees and 6-8 Foundation trainees. We aspire to constantly improve our services and are focussed in excelling the patient journey. Our Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) is well established with acute care pathways aiming to enhance our patient care and experience. It is a fantastic time to join Acute Medicine at UHP; as part of the first phase of our New Hospital programme, we have plans for a new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre incorporating a purpose built SDEC facility on our current site in the next 2-3 years.

Main duties of the job

We are pleased to invite applications for one Clinical Fellow in Acute Medicine (ST3+) (Non-training grade) within our established Acute Medical Department. This post will be a fixed term contract for 12 months. The successful candidate will have experience of working within acute medicine and would have experience in Same Day Emergency Care. The role is well supported, with on-site consultant cover from 8am to 10pm 7 days a week. The candidate is expected to deliver around 24 hours a week teaching medical students from Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PU PSMD).

Please note this vacancy is not recognised for training purposes, but the successful candidate will be given the same opportunities as the other trainees working on the Medical Rota, including equivalent study leave and study budget to facilitate CPD.

Working for our organisation

This post would be ideal for those wishing to advance a qualification in teaching and gain more experience in acute medicine. We would be pleased to negotiate 2 PAs of speciality time (speciality to be discussed) as a part of the post or offer funding for a PGCert in Medical Education / HELM should the successful candidate wish to pursue this. Opportunities to gain experience in specialities could be negotiated and we aim to tailor the post to support the successful applicant's continuing professional development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is encouraged to develop a speciality interest within the scope of the department with also research related ideas, QIP and audits.

We  support applications from candidates aspiring for less than full time hours and/or flexible working.

We have an active Doctors Mess, Postgraduate Medical School, Medical Centre, Medical Library and Health and Leisure centre on site.
