Main duties of the job

The Midwifery Practitioner will work as part of a Midwifery team providing care and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and childbirth, and postnatal care for women and babies in a range of settings such as the home, community, hospitals and Children’s Centres.

He/She has the knowledge and skills to care for women during their childbirth experience and is accountable for her practice.

He/She will work closely with obstetric colleagues when complications arise to ensure safe practice in whatever setting the mother chooses.

Working as part of a midwifery team, the post holder will contribute to the future development of the maternity service through participation in development initiatives.

The post is not area specific; all trust employees will work as appropriate to the needs of the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Care for women throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period both within the community and  hospital setting 

COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Communicate with people in a form and manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture, background and preferred ways of communicating
  • Communicate relevant information to women and their families in a manner that is consistent with and meets their individual needs
  • Develop and maintain communication with people about complex matters or difficult situations
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues in a manner that is consistent with relevant legislation, policies and procedures
  • Communicate appropriately with members of the multi-disciplinary team in relation to the care of individual women
  • Keep accurate and complete records of all activities and communication consistent with legislation, policies and procedures
  • Anticipate barriers to effective communication and take action to improve
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times as required by legislation and trust policy
  • Break bad news in an appropriate and empathetic manner
  • Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level, or ensure clear and concise advice is given to people on the complaints procedures in place (PALS, names and addresses of the senior team etc)
  • In the event of failing to resolve issues and complaints at a local level, report to the appropriate person
  • Contribute to the cascade of information to team members e.g. attending team Meetings/ Briefings
  • Take a proactive role in seeking out different styles and methods of communication to assist longer term needs and aims
  • Actively involves clients, relatives and carers in their treatment and enables individuals to assist in their own recovery.
  • Acts as an ambassador/role model for the organisation and the midwifery profession.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understands Risk Management and Complaints procedures
  • Up to date with the NHS Agenda, national directives and all Governance aspects
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of staff development and performance management

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered
  • Completed Preceptorship programme or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Proven evidence of continued appropriate studies

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels
  • Effective influencing skills: in general and with senior health care professionals
