Neuropathology Service Manager

Job overview

We are a tertiary service, providing a comprehensive adult neuropathology, including muscle, nerve, neurosurgical and autopsy pathology for the population of Devon and Cornwall. The service  works closely with the medical school to support a number of research projects and is part of one of three UK Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence.  You will also be part of the Cellular & Anatomical Pathology Management and Leadership team and will be responsible for additional specialist services within the department.   Experience in Neuropathology is advantageous, but not essential.   This is an exciting time for Cellular Pathology in Plymouth, we are in the process of deploying Digital Pathology, upgrading the LIMS/EPR and working closely across the Peninsula Network to transform the delivery of pathology.

You will have extensive Cellular pathology experience, including the management of staff. You will have excellent leadership and training skills.  You will hold a Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists and will be State registered with the Healthcare Professions Council.

Main duties of the job

Key Dimensions

 a.     Responsible for staff within the Neuropathology Laboratory, ensuring a timely, high quality, accurate service meeting the needs of our users.

b.     Responsible for the management and day-to-day highly specialised clinical technical activities of Neuropathology.

c.     Budget holder for a Neuropathology budget of £550,000

d.     The post holder will be responsible for the timely processing of the neuropathological specimens submitted for histological opinion from within the Trust and other hospitals across the Peninsula.

e.     To work collaboratively with the Cellular & Anatomical Pathology Technical Service Lead and section leads to ensure a smooth running of the service, across all areas of the department, consisting of over 85 wte Clinical, Technical and Non-Technical staff.

f.       To be responsible for a number of other sections within Cellular & Anatomical Pathology.

g.     To work closely with the Cellular & Anatomical Pathology Operations Manager in all aspects of the management of the department, will deputise for the Operations Manager in their absence.

h.     Responsible for compliance with Human Tissue Authority legislation within Neuropathology and other specialist sections.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Biomedical Science Honours degree or a science degree that is acceptable to the Institute of Biomedical Scientist.
  • Masters degree in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification to obtain Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Scientists
  • State registration with the Healthcare Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • • Management qualification ie Certificate or Diploma in Management Studies or equivalent

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Extensive demonstrable experience and understanding of histopathology laboratory working, including staff management.
  • High level, specialised technical skills
  • High level of awareness - up to date with issues relating to the area of work and the profession
  • Previous demonstrable experience of successful management of change
  • Proven good working knowledge of all guidance relating to the laboratory
  • Proven knowledge of UKAS standards
  • Proven management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Proven specialist knowledge and experience in the technical field of Neuropathology
  • Knowledge of iLab (histology IT system used by the Dept)
  • Comprehensive proven knowledge of health and safety and other directives
  • Previous demonstrable experience of managing a budget
  • Previously worked as a training officer or coordinator
  • Proven knowledge of Human Tissue Authority legislation
