Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Derriford Combined Laboratory for an Associate Practitioner position to work within Chemistry Special Investigations Lab.

The post holder will contribute to the provision of the blood sciences service, as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists and support workers, performing work activities in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.

Under the guidance of qualified staff, the Associate Practitioner will be responsible for performing a range of scientific procedures on biological samples that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases and the investigation of other pathological processes.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification***

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work together with senior staff and support staff in the CSI Laboratory to produce a timely, high quality, accurate and cost-effective service. Duties will include the preparation and extraction of samples ready for Faecal calprotectin analysis and the running of semi-automated analysers for a variety of different analytes and other general laboratory duties including some clerical work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Process biological samples including blood, urine, faeces and cerebral spinal fluid, taking personal responsibility for the quality of the results, which are used in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease.

Demonstrate the high level of skill to perform complex manual, semi automated and automated analytical techniques as applicable within the CSI lab.

Assist in the maintenance and running of any laboratory equipment as directed. This will include maintaining cleanliness to the necessary standard, discarding waste chemical solutions, replenishment of fresh solutions and use of the instruments.

Assist in Reagent and Stock management.

Participate in and understand the quality assurance programs of the department, both internal and external i.e. NEQAS (National External Quality Assurance Schemes).

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE in English and 2 other subjects
  • NVQ Level 3 in a relevant subject, and/or 2 A-Levels in relevant subjects or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • OR Considerable and evidenced laboratory experience to a level of an NVQ level 3
Desirable criteria
  • IBMS Support Staff Certificate of achievement Part II

Aptitude and Abilities

  • Well-developed technical skills.

  • Attention to detail, time management and organisation skills
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of information management systems

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 years experience in laboratory environment
