Engineering Apprentice (Electrical)

Job overview

This is an opportunity for an individual to complete a 4-year apprenticeship in electrical healthcare engineering. During this period the successful candidate will complete NVQ level 2 and 3 in electrical engineering which will provide the basic theoretical knowledge which is important for any engineering tradesperson. Alongside this work with the experienced healthcare engineering team at the hospital who will guide and develop the specific practical skills and knowledge to become a fully qualified hospital engineer.

On successful completion of all the necessary qualifications the candidate will become a fully qualified member of the team who carry out engineering maintenance work on all electrical services, systems, plant and equipment (Planned and Breakdown) in addition to electrical installation works in accordance with the current Regulations. This team prides itself on being able to tackle any job to keep clinical services operational and this is supported with continued development through training and mentoring in the varied systems the team are responsible for.

 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

 

Main duties of the job

Trainees covered by paragraph 2(iii), where periods of training last for between one and four years, pay will be adjusted as follows: 

(i)                  up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum of the fully qualified rate;

(ii)                (ii) more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate;

(iii)               (iii) more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training: 65 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate;

(iv)               (iv) more than three years from completion of training: 60 per cent of the pay band maximum for the qualified rate.

On successful completion of all the necessary qualifications the candidate will become a fully qualified member of the team who carry out engineering maintenance work. 

During the 4th year the candidate will begin to specialise in multiple of the healthcare disciplines which are the responsibility of the electrical maintenance team which include:

·         High Voltage,

·         Low Voltage,

·         Nurse Call,

·         Fire alarms,

·         Building energy management system (BeMS)

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Operational Engineering Service

 

1        To undertake the relevant training opportunities, academic qualifications and in-house mentoring, in order to become fully conversant, the Trust’s varied mechanical and electrical systems.

 

2       Use relevant tools, plant and equipment in a safe manner and in accordance with Manufacturers’ instructions.

 

3        Assist higher skilled grades on all types of maintenance, new works and repairs where suitably skilled and instructed.

 

4        Following a period of training and assessment the apprentice will be required to carry out semi-skilled duties, independently and without routine supervision, where directed by a qualified Tradesperson.

 

5        After a period of relevant training and with necessary supervision to carry out semi-skilled work of other trades (electrical and mechanical).

 

 

Following a period of suitable training and under supervision/instruction, the apprentice will be expected to: -

 

6        Select, collect and be responsible for materials as required.

 

7        Ensure that ward bed-head services are working safely and correctly for the benefit of patients and staff.

 

8        Provide and received information, reports, surveys and record results.

 

9        Basic understanding of computer use, and the information it provides.

 

10     Ensure all plant rooms/areas conform to all health and safety requirements.

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • No prior demonstrable experience required but a demonstrable interest in mechanical/electrical engineering through school or hobby interests
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant work demonstrable experience within an engineering environment

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 4 GCSE's, or equivalent, at Grades A* to C/9 - 4 including Maths, English and a science related subject
Desirable criteria
  • Minimum of 2 A Levels, or equivalent, in an engineering or science related subject

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal skills
  • Following a period of instruction, to carry out minor works and repairs unsupervised to the required standard
  • Work as a member of a workshop team
  • Be able to communicate with a wide cross-section of people
  • Demonstrate a mature and responsible attitude
  • The ability to assist craftsperson/technician
  • PC skills
