Freedom to Speak up Guardian

We are building on the success of the Trust's Freedom to Speak Up Guardian service and have increased our FTSU resource. We are seeking to recruit a Freedom to Speak Up Guardian  to further support embedding the Speaking Up agenda. The Freedom to Speak Up Guardian is a highly valued service in the Trust and is well supported by the Trust’s leaders and  Executive team.

The Freedom to Speak Up Guardian will work within the Guardian team, supporting the Lead Guardian as a visible advocate to protect patient safety, quality of care and staff experience. They will demonstrate compassionate leadership and improve the experience of colleagues who speak up by providing specialist advice, support, identifying and addressing any barriers to speaking up and promote a positive speaking up culture, supporting the Lead Guardian to ensure that as a result of issues raised there is an opportunity for learning and improving across the Trust.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication and influencing skills, the ability to engage with colleagues throughout the organisation to help make Speaking Up, Listening Up and Following Up business as usual. You must have the credibility to gain the trust of all staff and the Board and have tenacity to constructively challenge any barriers from colleagues and systems that may come up. Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS at Risk staff throughout Devon who is able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

  • The postholder will follow NGO guidance in independently managing and handling Speaking up cases, ensuring that their practice aligns with the wider Guardian team and that data, themes and learning are recorded and shared with the Lead Guardian to facilitate triangulation, learning and improvement.
  • The post holder will manage highly sensitive and confidential information utilising the FTSU database.
  • The postholder will support the Lead Guardian in identifying gaps in speaking up provision and engaging with key stakeholders to support the implementation of the FTSU strategy and implementation plan.
  • The postholder will seek to identify barriers to Speaking Up and work with the Lead Guardian to address these.
  • The postholder will provide accurate analytical reports to the Lead Guardian to enable analysis and reporting on FTSU data, themes, identified learning and recommendations.
  • The postholder will ensure up to date awareness of guidance from the National Guardian’s office to support review and improvement of the FTSU service at UHP.
  • The postholder will be responsible for disseminating information to the FTSU Champion network and providing training and supervision for champions.

  • Excellent Presentation skills, with the ability to influence and persuade staff of the importance of Speaking Up tailoring presentation style to the needs of the audience.
  • Understanding of the issues relating to cultural change and staff engagement
  • An understanding of the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion as they relate to staff and patients and able to demonstrate personal commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity within the workplace.
  • Awareness of current NHS and government strategic initiatives and key policies
  • Detailed understanding of the Trust, its values, key priorities, and challenges
  • Demonstrable experience of coaching and/or mentoring others

Qualifications

  • Willingness to undertake the National Guardian’s Office eLearning: Speak Up and Listen up.
  • Qualification or demonstrable experience in: Counselling, Mental Health First Aid, Coaching, Mediation

  • Recognised clinical professional qualification and significant demonstrable experience working in a clinical environment.
  • Ongoing membership of a clinical register (e.g., GMC, GDC, NMC, HCPC)
