Job overview

Applications are invited for the position of Healthcare Scientist Practitioner Apprenticeship within Clinical & Radiation Physics Group of the Directorate of Healthcare Science & Technology. 

Applicants should be eligible for entry onto practitioner training programme specialising in radiation physics and able to commit to the 3 year training programme. A permanent role may be offered on successful completion of the training programme and entry onto the appropriate registration (e.g. RCT/AHCS Practitioner register/HCPC).

The Clinical and Radiation Physics group provides scientific and technical support services for diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiation protection within the NHS, private and academic sectors. You will be responsible for delivering aspects of the quality assurance programme and radiation protection services for radiology and nuclear medicine equipment. You will be self-motivated and have excellent communication and organisational skills.      

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

 

Main duties of the job

1.1.          Perform daily technical administration for occupational and environmental monitoring.

1.2.          Issue and receipt of occupational and environmental monitors.

1.3.          Liaise with the Approved Dosimetry Service.

1.4.          Liaise with staff in regard to new staff for monitoring, non-returns and resolve any routine queries regarding occupational and environmental monitoring

1.5.          Organise calibration of radiation monitoring instruments including diagnostic, protection, and contamination monitoring equipment and liaise with providers.

1.6.          Organise and assist in local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation.

1.7.          Perform local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation

1.8.          Investigate and perform tests on faulty monitoring equipment and arrange repairs where necessary

1.9.       Perform regular checks on contamination monitoring equipment between calibrations

1.10.       Perform Quality Control measurements on wide range of complex x-ray and associated devices

1.11.       Analyse test results, produce reports of the findings, present and discuss these with other scientific staff.

1.12.       Maintain records for Clinical Trial activities.

1.13.       Manage the clinical trials mailbox and database and liaise with R&D and other staff to aid the MPEs in carrying out their assessment

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

2.             COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

2.1.          Communicate with customers, NHS Trust staff, non-NHS healthcare customers, service providers (UKHSA etc.).

2.2.          Liaise and co-operate with other scientific, medical and other professional staff. participate in work area, Group, Directorate and other meetings as required.

 

3.             QUALITY AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

3.1.          Follow procedures for record keeping and maintain accurate records of all work carried out.

3.2.          Participate in Directorate and Trust-wide corporate and clinical governance initiatives as appropriate.

3.3.          Be familiar with relevant quality management systems, procedures and work instructions. Propose changes to quality documentation for own work areas.

3.4.          Support the maintenance and development of the accredited quality system.

3.5.          Be familiar with the Trust’s adverse incident reporting procedure.

3.6.          Participate in audit and review of the service.

 

4.             OTHER

4.1.          Manage and prioritise own workload.

4.2.          Provide general technical administrative support

4.3.          Work flexibly to meet service requirements this will require some tasks to be performed outside the directorates core working hours. For example routine contamination monitoring is performed at the end of the extended working day (18.30).

4.4.          To behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided.

4.5.          Work safely at all times and in particular when working with sources of ionising radiations.

4.6.          The working environment may require the post holder to occasionally have exposure to unpleasant working conditions.

4.7.          Support training of other staff.

4.8.          Provide administrative support when needed to departmental and directorate activities including audits under the departmental quality system, use of the Trust asset database (eQuip) and the ordering of goods, and services (EPROC).

  • Advanced IT skills; advanced analysis using Microsoft excel and access

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 GCSEs at Grades A*-C (or equivalent level 2 qualifications) Minimum Level 2 in Numeracy and Literacy (e.g Grade C - 5 or above in GCSE Maths and English) Level 3 Qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS Points (A Level grades C/C/C, including at least one relevant STEM (e.g. physics, engineering, mathematics)* at 32 points/grade C or higher OR Lower grades may be accepted if accompanied by extensive (4 year plus) experience in relevant setting e.g. Healthcare Science– see below Accepted Level 3 qualifications with extensive (4+ years) relevant work experience: A level – a minimum of 64 points (CC), including at least one relevant STEM subject at 32 points/Grade C or higher. BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science – including pass grades in units that relate to the PTP specialism specified within the application. BTEC National Extended Diploma - Grade MPP, including at least one relevant STEM subject. Access to Higher Education Diploma - at least 45 credits achieved at level 3 (15 at merit or above); 15 level 3 credits must be in STEM based unit
