Job overview

The opportunity to apply for the substantive role a Ward Manager role of the tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in a large teaching hospital. 

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

As a key member of the Clinical Management Team, you will be working under the professional direction of the Matron for Neonatal and Transitional Care services, Head of Women's and Children’s Nursing and the Director of Nursing for W&C. Associate Chief Nursing Officer. 

You will provide senior leadership, clinical expertise, support and advice to assure high quality care provision for infants and families accessing Neonatal Intensive Care  Services. 

Responsible for managing nursing and support worker teams, clinical leadership, infection prevention and control and standards of patient care, you will act as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership and demonstration of competent, accountable clinical practice and modelling of Trust values.

You will be responsible for the performance management of key individuals within the neonatal service and will through appropriate staff training and updating, ensure that neonatal care is evidence based and delivered by competent and confident practitioners according to Trust policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and clinical nursing practice by delivering evidenced based care

§  Lead, co-ordinate and manage the tertiary service workload using expert clinical judgement and decision-making skills, in collaboration where required with the service consultant whilst maintaining safe standards of care.

 

§  Competent in the use of medical devices and responsible for the correct use of specialist equipment by the multidisciplinary team

§  Promote a positive and  professional working environment

 

§  Provide clinical supervision to staff

§  Lead emergency situations within the clinical practice areas where appropriate

§  Liaise with and report to the multidisciplinary team in the provision of family centred care

 

§  Identify, manage and refer appropriately  infants requiring Safeguarding assessment

 

§  Co-ordinate and manage infants discharge/ transfer to other care services

 

§  Encourage parents and carers to be actively involved in the planning and delivery of care to their infant

 

§  Responsible for the development, implementation and compliance with local policies and guidelines

 

§  Promote health education within the clinical area for families

 

§  Act as a role model in practicing evidence based nursing care

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First Level Qualification – RGN, RSCN, RN Child Branch,
  • Current Registration with NMC
  • Recognised Qualified in Speciality course
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in Nursing
  • Working towards degree/MSc

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience within a similar role
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Demonstrable experience in recruitment, selection and personnel management
Desirable criteria
  • Proven knowledge of HR processes
  • Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of hospital budgets/funds

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Incorporates customer care in the clinical setting
  • Competent in numeracy and literacy
