Job overview

We welcome applications to join our regional NICU as a Post-CCT Clinical Fellow in Neonatal Medicine and Neonatal Transport.  This post represents an excellent opportunity to develop consultant level working skills within a supportive multi-professional team whilst extending and enhancing your multidimensional portfolio and transport skills. It is anticipated that there will be opportunities for appointment to at least 1 substantive consultant post during this 1-year Fellowship.

The Department of Neonatal Medicine is based in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) situated on Level 5 of the Maternity Department, which is connected to the main hospital by a link corridor.  Plymouth is the largest maternity unit in the Peninsula (approximately 4000 inborn per annum) and is designated as one of the Network NICU facilities for the South West Neonatal Operational Delivery Network.  The NICU currently has 14 intensive / high dependency, 8 special and 18 transitional care cots. Recruitment is ongoing to ensure that BAPM recommended levels of nurse staffing are achieved. The unit manages neonatal intensive care problems apart from those requiring specialist surgical and tertiary cardiac involvement, who are transferred to Bristol or Southampton.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post (10 PAs). Direct Clinical Care (DCC) of 8.5 PA and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) of 1.5 PA. Applications to work less than full time will be considered. Duties include consultant level neonatal service cover, including non-resident on call duties, in addition to some resident duties working at middle grade, for the transport service- SoNAR, this will comprise approximately half of the role.  There will be opportunities to flexibly tailor duties to accommodate relevant specialist interests that complement the department’s existing portfolio.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Daytime responsibilities

Your daytime responsibilities comprise clinical weeks providing consultant led care in a week on service model that includes NICU Service – consultant in charge of and responsible for NICU for the week, TCW - consultant in charge of and responsible for TCW, post-natal ward, antenatal liaison and medical student teaching for the week. The Post-CCT fellow will also contribute to the middle grade rota for transport (Monday-Friday, 0800-2000) with development into the transport consultant role.

 When not on service you will have ample time in non-acute weeks for personal/professional development in the domains of education, governance, management, research and specialist clinical practice etc.

It is expected that appointees will afford priority to their on-service duties and will not arrange annual, study, or professional leave or any other activities that would take them away from their clinical duties during on-service weeks, other than in exceptional circumstances.

 

Out-of-hours working

Out of hours duties are based on a fully annualised total on call frequency of 1 in 8. This attracts a 5% on call remuneration supplement, in accordance with the Terms & Conditions of Service – Specialty Doctor (England) April 2008 (Version 4 – 1st April 2018).

 

On call duties of the Post-CCT Fellow will include consultant level on calls undertaken on a non-resident basis (the post-holder must live within a Trust approved geographical radius that permits attendance within 30 minutes when required, or be prepared to stay on site in Trust accommodation when on call). The post-holder must be reliably contactable by telephone when non-resident and on call.

 

 

 

Non Clinical Duties

You job plan includes non-acute weeks during which time neonatal follow-up outpatient clinics may be undertaken, as well as maintenance of ongoing responsibility for inpatient neonatal care, for example through parent consultations and/or discharge planning meetings. During the non-acute weeks you will have ample opportunity to undertake personal/professional development in various domains including education, clinical governance, management, research and areas of specialist clinical practice.  Personal CPD aligned to the framework required by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health would be optimally undertaken during these non-acute weeks. An annualised weekly allocation of 1.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Supporting Professional Activity is provided in the job plan for this purpose.

Essential criteria
  • GMC registration on the Specialist Register or eligibility for registration
  • CCT/CCST in Paediatrics or equivalent including CESR (Paediatrics) or eligible for CCT and registration within 6 months of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of RCPCH approved NTN GRID Training in Neonatal Medicine resulting in CCT/CCST in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) or equivalent including CESR (Paediatrics) with subspecialty recognition in Neonatal Medicine or Neonatal Board certification from North America. Canada or Australasia (or eligible for CCT and registration within 6 months of interview)

Academic Qualification

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • BSc, MSc, DM/MD, PhD or equivalent higher degree
  • Neonatal SPIN

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience and practice in tertiary neonatal medicine (minimum 2 years at middle grade)
  • Advanced skills in neonatal medicine
  • NLS Provider (or equivalent)
  • Level 3 Child Protection competency
  • Previous experience of neonatal transport
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist interest within neonatology
  • Evidence of experience & practice in complementary domain eg cardiology, genetics, neurology, PICU, transport
  • NLS or ARNI Instructor
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Formal qualification in neonatal transport medicine

Teaching

Essential criteria
