Cellular & Anatomical Pathology Services Manager

You will have extensive Cellular pathology and / or managerial experience and will work with the Senior management team deliver key projects. You will have excellent leadership skills to deliver new operational targets, which include the faster diagnostic standard, Pathology Quality Assurance Dashboard and further develop the potential of the Department to meet the ever-increasing needs of the patients served by the hospital, both local and regional. You will lead an innovative workforce strategy to meet the highly skilled requirements in all areas of Cell Pathology techniques, routine work, Special stains, Immunohistochemical and molecular techniques.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

The post holder will manage a department with approximately 83wte managing non medical staff including Scientific, Technical, Administrative, Medical Secretaries, Clerical and support staff via section leads.
The post holder will work closely with the Service Line Clinical Director, along with other medical staff and senior laboratory staff within the department, to ensure that a  timely, high quality, accurate and cost effective service. 
The post holder will ensure the timely processing of approximately 35,000 biological requests per annum that have been submitted for Histological and Cytological opinion, and the provision of efficient and secure Mortuary services.

Scientific & Professional

1.     Responsible for provision and effective delivery of highly specialist clinical technical services.

2.     Responsible for the evaluation of new equipment, new/replacement test methods and new techniques within the Service.

3.     Responsible for planning and prioritising the service demands and workload.

4.     Responsible for all staff observing all departmental, Trust, national Health & Safety regulations relevant to the service.  Undertake any risk assessment necessary to meet these requirements. 

5.     Responsible for ensuring the maintenance, condition, quality control and record keeping of instruments and equipment associated with the provision of services, including a contemporary fault & service log.

6.     The post holder will be required to provide complex, specialist, technical advice and information relating to results, reports and processes which may be very sensitive in nature.

7.     Attendance at local/national/regional scientific meetings.

8.     To continually update knowledge and skills and ensure contemporaneous documentation of this and other activities in the Continuing Professional Development file.

9.     To maintain an awareness of current developments within the professions allied to Pathology.

10.   To attend any training courses. These may be either Trust led or external to the Trust. To complete Essential Skills and Knowledge Update Training annually.

11.   To participate in an annual Appraisal and achieve any targets set at this time.

12.   Responsible for the organisation of scientific and managerial teaching programmes.

13.   The mortuary manager, section leads for histology and special procedures, will report to the clinical leads for each area, for the clinical aspects of the service. The neuropathology manager is accountable to the Clinical Head of Neuropathology for planning and delivery of the clinical neuropathology service, and to the post holder for Departmental, Service Line and Trust-wide issues, including health and safety, quality, and staff training and development.

  • • proven knowledge of Risk Management and Clinical Governance.
  • • A proven comprehensive working knowledge and practical application of a Pathology IT system

  • • Proven knowledge of the principles of LEAN, 5S and 6 sigma

Qualifications
