Specialist Vestibular Physiotherapist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated and passionate physiotherapist to join our ENT Team to provide specialist vestibular assessment and treatment for 12 months on a fixed-term contract as Band 7/8a Specialist Vestibular Physiotherapist (depending on the level of experience, qualification and vestibular training). The post holder will be responsible for setting up specialist vestibular clinics and assessing, treating and managing patients with vertigo and balance dysfunction. The post holder will develop, run, deliver and evaluate the pathway in conjunction with the ENT and Audiology service line and ENT consultants supporting the balance and dizziness pathway. The successful candidate will collect, understand, and analyse data related to clinical outcomes and performance metrics and be able to demonstrate benefits to the trust, with the potential to establish permanent funding for the service in the future and make this a substantive post.

 ***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

 

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

 

     To provide specialist vestibular assessment, treatment and management of patients with vertigo and balance dysfunction. Patients will be referred by ENT consultants, GPs, ED workers and other clinical professionals into multidisciplinary vestibular assessment pathway, for appropriate assessment, clinical diagnosis and onward management.

·         To develop, run, deliver and evaluate the pathway in conjunction with the ENT and Audiology service line and ENT consultants supporting the balance and dizziness pathway.

 

·         To work within current practice and develop evidence-based therapy protocols in conjunction with the ENT Consultants, and to oversee their dissemination throughout the Trust and to the wider population through appropriate forums.

·         To collect, understand and analyse data related to clinical outcomes and performance metrics and be able to demonstrate markers of success criteria.

 

·         To be responsible for physiotherapy service development within the field of vestibular rehabilitation.

 

·         This role will involve training to allow an extended scope of practice within agreed protocols and to support the development of the ENT service in the future. 

·         To act as a source of expertise on the assessment, management, training and education of vestibular conditions to patients, and other physiotherapy staff and students, other healthcare professionals, Consultants and GP’s.

Clinical

  1. To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support more junior staff to do likewise.

2.    Maintenance of competencies is essential due to the acute, complex and unstable nature of the patients.

  1. To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate clinical diagnosis and prognoses in a wide range of highly complex conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive management plans.
  1. To represent the trust externally (locally, regionally and nationally) regarding physiotherapy services provided to patients with complex conditions.
  1. To undertake the comprehensive assessment of patients, including those with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills, and to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning, and utilising a wide range or treatment skills and options to formulate a specialised programme of care and to support junior staff in this work.
  1. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  1. To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory senses for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
  1. To participate in working parties developing policy changes within the wards, Intensive Care Environments and out-patient areas at Derriford Hospital, which will impact on all service users.
  1. To ensure, as team leader, that designated staff implement policy and service development changes.
  1. To work with consultants and head of service in developing the strategic and operational management of the rehabilitation services.
  1. To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to patients/relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy, and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care and individual rehabilitation goals.
  1. To provide specialist and highly specialist advice to physiotherapy colleagues and MDT working within other clinical areas, regarding rehabilitation.
  1. To provide specialist advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT regarding the management of patients with complex problems.
  1. To regularly teach, train, supervise and performance manage more junior staff, technical instructors, assistants and students.  This will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.
  1. Use an extensive range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients/carers; to motivate, gain co-operation, to progress rehabilitation and treatment programmes.  This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating; e.g.: patients may be dysphasic, depressed, deaf, blind or who may be unable to accept diagnosis, or realistic expectations of Physiotherapy intervention.
  1. To assess capacity, gain valid informed consent, which must be documented and have the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment. To comply with local confidentiality polices and vulnerable adult’s procedures.

 

Professional

  1. To maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any new trends and developments, and incorporate them as necessary into your work.
  1. To be an active member/lead of the in-service training programme by attending and delivering presentations and training sessions at staff meetings, tutorials, training sessions in house and by attending/organising external courses and practising reflective practice.
  1. To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues at all levels to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.  This will include case conferences, ward rounds and discharge planning.
  1. To participate in the staff appraisal scheme and Personal Development Plan (PDP) as both appraiser and appraise.
  1. To undertake the measurement and evaluation of your work and current practices through the use of Evidence Based Practice projects, audit and outcome measures, either individually or with clinical specialist or manager.  Make recommendations for change.
  1. To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management and apply to work situation.

Organisational

 

  1. To be responsible for a designated area of work, as agreed with the Service Line Manager, and to plan and organise efficiently and effectively with regard to patients management and use of time.
  1. To decide priorities for own work area, balancing other patient related and professional demands, and ensure that these remain in accordance with those of the section as a whole.
  1. To be responsible for ensuring the effective selection and use of all treatment resources available both in the out patient department and on the wards.
  1. To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy duties, and to adhere to departmental policy, including competence to use equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through, teaching, training and supervision of practice.
  1. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation, in line with legal and departmental requirements, and communicate assessment and treatment results to the appropriate disciplines in the form of reports and letters.
  1. To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the department.
  1. To be aware of Health and Safety aspects of your work and implement any policies, which may be required to improve the safety of your work area, including your prompt recording and reporting of incidents to senior staff, and ensuring that equipment use is safe.
  1. To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures and to be involved in the reviewing, instigating, devising and updating as appropriate.
  2. To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Service Line Manager or Consultant.
