Job overview

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated and passionate Band 6 Physiotherapist to become a core member our Surgery/ICU team in a static role. This dynamic team is looking for someone who is confident to deliver high quality therapeutic assessments and interventions that include but not limited to Plastic surgery speciality.

The role will focus on the Plastic speciality such as Burns, ortho plastic / reconstruction and Head and Neck Cancer (including Max Fax / ENT).  Also includes supporting the surgical physio team covering including Intensive care, urology, vascular, HPB, renal, gynae and general surgery. The role will include working within an established MDT of health care professionals that strive to put our patients first by delivering high quality care.

The successful candidate will join this well-established service to support, deliver and develop this service for the local Health Community. University Hospitals Plymouth is committed to providing both quality care to the local population and supporting our staff as part of the South West Burns facility, Peninsula Major Trauma Centre and South West Head and Neck Centre.

You will have opportunities to develop your clinical skills and knowledge through staff supervision, mentoring and in-service training and supported by the band 7s to enhance and improve current physiotherapy provisions.

Previous experience in surgical physiotherapy is essential for the role.

 

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard physiotherapy service to surgical wards, intensive care unit, high dependency unit. This involves working across the trust and peripheral sites in a range of settings providing a seven day service to Plastic speciality such as Burns, ortho plastic / reconstruction and Head and Neck Cancer (including Max Fax / ENT), Intensive care, urology, vascular, HPB, renal, gynae and general surgery.

To assist the Team Leaders in planning, developing, coordinating, delivering and evaluating the Physiotherapy Service provided to patients within the team, on a day-to-day basis.

To deputise for the Team Leaders when necessary.

To perform advanced physiotherapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, to provide a diagnosis and develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.

To hold responsibility for leading and managing surgical patients on a daily basis, with support from Team Lead, Head of Physiotherapy.

To hold responsibility for own case load and be responsible for a defined area of the service or a particular patient type, working autonomously.

Senior support and supervision takes the form of regular formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences.  Access to advice and support from specialist physiotherapists is available if required, clinical work is not routinely evaluated.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable Post graduate experience in core rotations: Neurology / Acute Respiratory / Trauma and Orthopaedics / MSK.
  • Demonstrable experience of working acute hospital.
  • Demonstrable Experience of teaching
  • Proven Evidence of contribution to clinical education / supervision of less experienced staff, students or assistants
  • Demonstrable Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Proven Evidence of relevant CPD
  • An awareness of current NHS and Health issues related to surgery and intensive care.
  • Experience working in surgical areas.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in ICU.
  • Demonstrable Experience of working in a major trauma unit.
  • Clinical educator.
  • Demonstrable Experience of working at Band 6 level.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree (BSc Hons Physiotherapy) or equivalent.
  • HCPC registration
  • Attendance of additional relevant professional courses.
Desirable criteria
  • MSc in relevant area
  • Leadership qualification
