A fantastic opportunity has arisen with the creation of a new post at University Hospitals Plymouth for a Head of Nursing for Theatres. We are looking for a Nurse or ODP to become our Head of Perioperative Services (Clinical). You will be a highly dynamic and self-motivated individual with extensive perioperative demonstrable experience. We are looking for someone to join our expanding theatre services with over 30 theatres and further theatres estates developments underway. Your key will be to drive and manage theatre productivity, you will be the Strategic lead (clinical) for perioperative services, and the development of patient centred practice throughout the pathway to ensure provision of a high quality and responsive workforce upholding high standards of patient experience.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification. - If Internal staff member appointed, available as a fixed term contract or secondment opportunity. (With current line managers agreement). If position is offered as a secondment there could be a possibility of it being made permanent***

- The post holder will work as part of the Care Group management team arrangements with responsibility for ensuring that quality, performance and service standards and cost are an integral part of and inform decision making.
- The post holder will have full management responsibility for all nursing and AHPs within perioperative services and anaesthesia.
- The post holder by supporting the delivery of the Care Group operating plan will need to take responsibility for a wide range of areas including operational management and clinical delivery, redesign, productivity, governance and regulatory compliance plans.
- The Head of Perioperative Services (Clinical) will have direct managerial responsibility for senior nursing / AHP and matron roles within the peri operative framework, supporting them in their delivery of responsibilities within their respective service lines, working in association with their service line management teams.

- To drive the productivity of theatre sessions, engaging teams and standardising ways of working.
- To be responsible for the professional leadership and development of the workforce within theatre central / perioperative services in order to facilitate the delivery of excellent clinical practice.
- To lead by example, working within the Trust values to empower and develop leadership of all the relevant workforce, enabling each member of staff to perform to the best of their ability providing high quality patient care within available resources.
- To deliver the workforce strategy within the theatre portfolio, this will form an integral part of the Care Group strategy and in year operational work plan.
- To provide professional advice to the Care Group Manager, Care Group Director, clinicians, and other senior managers within the Trust with specific relation to theatres. To act as a clinical expert resource for safety, governance, service/ pathway reviews, development and workforce redesign
- To participate as a senior member of the Care Group Management team for supporting business planning, service developments and operational delivery including achievement of performance targets.
- To be accountable for the standard of care and practice within perioperative services. To lead in implementing and maintaining the quality governance, patient experience and risk management work plan, including the evidence of CQC essential standards and outcomes.
- To take responsibility for the quality governance portfolios of work including complaints, risks, safety, quality, effectiveness, and patient experience, ensuring high impact, measurable outcomes are delivered in mitigating risk and improving quality, safety and patient experience relating to perioperative services.
- To facilitate and challenge clinical practice and processes and involve relevant staff in improving patients’ services and quality. Developing approaches for the utilisation of best practice and research evidence which supports nursing and improves patients’ experience.
- To assist the care group management team in financial management of theatres by managing within budgets, developing, and delivering financial improvement programmes, complying with Trust financial rules, recognising and balancing finance versus quality/safety/efficiency.
- To directly line manage and provide professional leadership to the senior nursing community e.g. AHP, CNS, ACP, Matron and lead on performance management of the senior workforce community on their nursing budgets, ensuring controls for workforce management (such as temporary staff, rostering, management of lead and absence) are robust.
- Budget holder for senior nurses within line management.
- To lead with the Deputy Chief Nurse Associate Chief Nurse an annual review of all skill mix and establishments, using national and professional benchmarks.

- Current NMC/HCPC Registration.
- Educated to master’s level or equivalent demonstrable experience.
- Proven evidence of on-going professional development and post-registration education at post-graduate level

- Relevant teaching qualification/certificate
Knowledge and Experience

- Substantial demonstrable experience working in health care within theatre and anaesthetic settings
- Demonstratable experience of working at a Matron level including within the theatre setting.
- Demonstrable experience of clinical working in acute hospital settings
- Proven knowledge / demonstrable experience of patient pathways relevant to the theatre environment and associated interventional suites.
- Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of providing clinical supervision and being clinical role model.
- Good proven working knowledge of Mental Capacity Act and experience in use for clinical decision-making, Best Interest decisions, DOLS etc

- Excellent communication skills, with effectiveness in written and verbal communications including ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and carers on sensitive issues.
- Ability to lead, supervising and developing clinical practice – with resilience and flexibility to work alongside different teams.
