Job overview

The successful applicant must show a commitment to high quality patient care and excellent team work along with a genuine interest in the care of patients undergoing invasive procedures.  It will also be required to work in partnership with other teams within the Theatre Central cluster, supporting staff, students, patients and relatives.

The Obstetric, Gynae, and Breast Theatre Unit at University Hospital Plymouth consists of four operating theatres within Theatre Central. We provide a 24/7 Obstetric Emergency service and offer elective Breast and Gynae surgeries, including the newly introduced Gynae Robotic surgery.

Plymouth Hospitals is a large acute trust in the Southwest of England, situated on the Devon and Cornwall border and provides perioperative care for elective and emergency patients across the region. The hospital is a designated Trauma Centre and tertiary referral centre for Neurological and Cardiac patients. The trust is a teaching hospital with close links to the Peninsula Medical School and the University of Plymouth.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

  • Provides high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period
  • Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader
  • Demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based practise and clinical excellence
  • Assist with projects to develop and enhance patient care.
  • Assists in other clinical areas and speciality theatres
  • Attend relevant meetings and deliver feedback
  • To develop and achieve objectives identified through continuing appraisal of job role
  • To develop appraisal skills and carry out appraisals and personal development plan for non-registered practitioners
  • Report and manage untoward incidents as detailed in Trust policies and procedures
  • Contributing towards maintaining the set standard of clinical practise. Participating in audit and quality monitoring
  • Managing the clinical risk relating to individuals or a group of patients care, reporting issues to appropriate senior staff
  • Efficient and effective use of available resources
  • In exceptional circumstances to take charge in the absence of senior staff
  • Maintain active NMC/HPC registration
  • Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provides high quality care to patients and their families during the perioperative period
  • Reporting and documenting all relevant patient needs, communicating changes to other health professionals in the multidisciplinary team.
  • Act as Practitioner in charge, in the absence of the Team Leader ensuring efficient allocation of staff and resources
  • Demonstrates a commitment to evidence-based practise and clinical excellence and play an active role in the introduction of this evidence to improve patient centred care
  • To engage and interact with patients and their carers, explaining procedures and treatments to gain co-operation, understanding and allay apprehension
  • Assist with projects to develop and enhance patient care. Participate in the evaluation of patient outcomes, including audit, risk management and infection control
  • Assists in other clinical areas and speciality theatres if the clinical situation and staffing levels demand
  • Attend relevant meetings and deliver feedback.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • RN/ODP training completed
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of perioperative care
  • Completed a Preceptorship programme
  • Competent in anaesthetics, scrub and recovery

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • HCPC registered ODP
Desirable criteria
  • Basic computer skills (ECDL)
  • Relevant theatre-based course e.g. HEA 362
  • Mentorship/NVQ Trainer/Assessor/Theatre Educator or relevant educational course e.g. Cert Ed or ENB 998
  • Educated to diploma or degree level

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate clinical care and act accordingly
  • Proven evidence of recent CPD knowledge and ability to apply evidence-based practice
  • Appraisal skills
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable awareness of financial constraints
  • Methodical and organised
  • Enthusiasm for introducing and facilitating change
