The post holder provides visible and professional clinical & management leadership to in-patient and community settings which sit within a locality.

The post holder provides direct line management and support to the ward/community team managers as appropriate with the support of the Service Line Manager/Community Service Manager.

The post holder leads on the implementation and adherence to the Matrons Charter.

The post holder provides a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the inpatient & community settings.

The post holder will be working across organisations and communicating with a range of professionals, patients and their families

Main duties of the job

Responsible for overseeing and performance management of ward and department nurse managers in managing their nursing teams and budgets. Responsible for recruitment and supervision of Ward Managers, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Practice Educators and other key personnel.

Responsible for overseeing and performance management of Band 7 Community Nurse Team Manager in managing their respective teams and budgets. Also responsible for managing Long Term Conditions Matrons, Specialist Nurses and other key personnel in the Tavistock Community

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.         Responsible for the day to day management of staff groups across several sites including In-patient staff, Community Nursing, Ageing well team, Admiral Nurse and Community Matrons. Liaising with appropriate managers and facilitating Ward and relevant Team Managers and their deputies in dealing with issues such as staffing and operational issues.

 

2.         Ensure appropriate delegation of and participation in out-of-hours rota / on-call rota where appropriate. Frequency: approximately 8 duty slots within a 3 month period. Pay as per Agenda for Change guidance.

 

3.         Provide expert clinical leadership and support to Ward/Community managers and nurses acting as a role model in provision of clear direction for nursing and practice development.

 

4.         To support and ensure the implementation of clinical supervision for staff within areas of responsibility.

 

5.         Where standards for facilities services are not met, take corrective action as appropriate.

 

6.         Provide line management to delegated personnel within the service structure.

 

7.         Provide nursing and managerial knowledge and experience to any member of the multi-disciplinary team in relation to patient care, ensuring a visible presence is maintained in all clinical areas, endeavouring to spend at least 60% of work time in a clinical environment

 

8.         The role includes a balance of clinical and managerial responsibilities which may vary according to need and to be agreed by the Service Line Manager/Community Service Manager.

 

9.         Provide clinical supervision and support to nursing and other professional colleagues.

 

10.      Lead on specific aspects of nursing and service development in agreement with the Service Line Manager/Community Service Manager.

 

11.      Set, agree and monitor standards for clinical practice and patient care and ensure teams have the right skills to deliver a high quality service.

 

12.      Develop opportunities to enhance service user involvement and carers.

 

13.      Work within your budget

 

14.      Ensure there is a focus on admission avoidance/length of stay to reduce iatrogenic harm

 

15.      Adopt the standard ward processes and Every Day Matters

 

 

16.         Active participation in service improvement projects

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable Change management experience
  • Demonstrable experience in project management
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and developing local services within a MDT
  • Extensive demonstrable experience as Ward/Unit/Community Nurse Manager or other equivalent position
  • Managing budgets and ability to monitor and assess financial information
  • Implement strategy and guidance
  • Presentation skills
  • Demonstrable experience of conducting audits
  • Proven knowledge of health and social care policies/processes and structures
  • Well-developed leadership skills
  • Proven evidence of sound knowledge of infection control policy nationally and locally
