Job Summary

As a key leader the head of Occupational Therapy will provide leadership, facilitation and direction to Health Occupational Therapy staff  within the Trust. You will work in collaboration with the Head of Occupational Therapy ( adult social care)  to ensure  professional leadership and  responsibility for providing high quality patient focused occupational therapy services.

The Head of Occupational Therapy has responsibility for the development and clinical supervision for all the Occupational Therapists. Providing  expert advice and guidance to staff. 

A key part of the role will be to maintain leadership within their specific registration. They will ensure that legal and professional responsibilities are met by the profession through compliance with the regulatory requirements of the HCPC and the relevant professional body.

The post holder is expected to work with autonomy and establish ways of working within the Trust, Local Authority, and general health Policies.  Working with service managers, operational managers, and other AHPs and multidisciplinary team leads to ensure goals and standards are set for the Occupational Therapists.

Main Duties

  • The post holder will provide professional leadership, advice and support to the Occupational Therapy profession in TSDFT to provide high quality services, develop, make and sustain improvements.
  • The post holder will facilitate the provision of Occupational Therapy services across inpatient, specialist outpatient, community hospitals and community Occupational Therapy teams. The post holder will be accountable for and manage services for which they have operational and budgetary responsibility.
  •                 You will work as part of the Families and Communities Care Group, fulfilling  Care Group and Trust requirements of budget management, clinical governance and service improvement.
  •      Direct professional supervision of TSDFT Occupational Therapy leads and therapy managers, who are Occupational Therapists.
  •      Direct line management and budgetary responsibility for the Occupational Therapy band 5 rotation and Occupational Therapy service administration.
  •     Clinical work: The post holder will hold a patient / service user caseload appropriate to their area of speciality. This will be a proportional caseload in recognition of the leadership and management responsibilities of the post.

 

    There is an anticipation that the post holder will offer support to the Trust on-call rota and will be required to work over 7 days a week in line with the Organisation’s developing 7-day services policies.

About Us

 There are approximately 150 non registered and registered Occupational Therapists within the Trust . You will provide Professional Leadership to the Health OTs within the Trust.

You will also line manage the Band 5 rotation within the Trust for OTs and work closely with the Head of Physiotherapy to ensure that patients are receiving proactive therapeutic treatment in the right place at the right time.

·       To be responsible for the strategic planning and development of Occupational Therapy services across TSDFT, including provision of the band 5 Occupational Therapy rotation.

 

·       To provide clinical leadership and professional leadership for approximately 150 registered and non-registered Occupational Therapy staff.

 

·       To contribute to the social care agenda and social care improvement plan.

 

·       To be an integral part of the AHP leadership team, working closely with the other Heads of Service and Associate Directors of Nursing and Professional Practice.

 

·       As the Trust’s principal Occupational Therapist, the post holder functions at a senior level within the Health, Education and Social Care Communities, to ensure the provision of efficient and effective service delivery to standards which are in line with those directed by the Department of Health, the Health and Care Professions Council, national social care legislation and TSDFT organisational policies.

 

·       To deputise for the Associate Director of Nursing and Professional Practice including support and attendance at Professional Practice committees, service delivery unit meetings, Trust wide meetings and represent therapies as delegated in transformational initiatives and systems development.

 

·       To advise senior management on matters relating to Occupational Therapy.

 

·       To lead service improvement and modernisation of Occupational Therapy and support quality and care governance.

 

·       To provide line management to the Occupational Therapy band 5 rotation and the Occupational Therapy service administration. This role may include responsibility and leadership for a multi-professional service within the Care Group

 

 

·       To take the lead in strategic planning and development of the range of Occupational Therapy services, communicating this at all levels within the organisations and with stakeholders.

 

·       To be an active and integral participant in the Organisation’s progress towards transformed health and social care models.

 

·        To support the delivery of Devon’s Sustainability and Transformation Plan.

Qualifications and training

  • A Professional qualification in Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy or Physiotherapy
  • Master’s Degree in a field relevant to children’s healthcare or equivalent demonstrable level of knowledge evidenced by Masters level training courses and experience
  • Registration with the relevant professional body
  • Evidence of recent, relevant CPD

  • Management and / or leadership training or equivalent experience

  • Extensive knowledge of the provision of healthcare for children, young people and families within the NHS
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, NHS policy and other national policy relating to children and young people and its implications for Nursing
  • Extensive knowledge relating to Integrated Therapies practice
  • Knowledge of national developments within the Allied Health professions’ workforce
  • Excellent knowledge of research and evidence-based practice relating to clinical practice
  • Sound understanding of the quality and governance framework within the NHS
  • Knowledge of the complex multi-agency systems providing health, education and social care for children and young people
  • Up to date working knowledge of legislation, regulation, policy, guidance and practice relating to safeguarding children
  • Experience in a senior clinical role within children and young people’s healthcare
  • Experience of effective working at a senior level in large, complex environments
  • Experience of working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary services and across organisational boundaries
  • Experience of having led service improvement
  • Experience of managing systems to capture and report service activity, performance and quality metrics
  • Experience of using data to drive service improvements
  • Experience of working as an autonomous individual with the ability to take on responsibility, make decisions and seek support as needed
  • Experience of supervising or managing others
  • Experience of staff and service user engagement to develop and improve services
  • Significant experience in a clinical leadership role
  • Experience of undertaking research, clinical audit and service evaluation and applying the learning to clinical care
  • Experience of developing and implementing strategies
  • Experience of integrating principles of human rights diversity and inclusion in clinical and leadership practice
