Job overview

The Digital Innovation Developer will be responsible for the design, production and delivery of a variety of innovation projects benefiting the trust. The material will be consumed by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust staff, patient groups, and staff from our partners and external organisations. Enabling the development and adoption of Digital Skills in both Acute and Communities sites to drive digital transformation.

A key aspect of the role will be mentoring and supporting student placements within the Digital Futures team and to take an active role in the development of a career pipeline within our Digital Innovation provision.

Main duties of the job


The Digital Innovation team’s aim is to develop new and innovative products and solutions to enhance both education & training (including simulation), research outcomes, and service improvement at the Trust. This often includes development of applications, prototypes & packages in a range of technology areas, including XR technologies, artificial intelligence, 360 content creation, app development, 3d scanning & printing, as well as new and emerging tech sectors.

In the context of this role this will include primarily working on a collaborative basis with the digital team – providing input on design creation and programming skills to enable the continued creation and development of project outcomes – both internal and external.

The Digital Innovation Developer will principally fulfil the following needs:


  • To produce content for the digital innovation lab for a range of different media devices and lead projects as required.

  • To provide technical expertise and advice in the use of digital technology.
  • To develop digital technology solutions for research, education and training across the organisation.
  • To mentor and support student placements within the team.
  • The post holder will apply digital technologies for the benefit of staff, patients and patient families.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communication and working relationships

• Closely work with and support the Digital Innovation Lead and the digital innovation team in working towards objectives, project deadlines and innovation outcomes.


• Liaises with a number of staff groups, potential stakeholders and clients in relation to Digital Innovation across the trust, particularly around XR Technologies.


• Attend meetings, via MS Teams, internal to the organisation to discuss work and projects that the digital innovation team is supporting.


• Day to day contact with a variety of staff, service users and partners.


• The post holder may be a point of contact for the innovation lab (Digital Futures team), for example a project request comes into the digital futures email inbox.


• Act as an ambassador for digital innovation and development across the trust.


• Provides advice, guidance, encouragement and support on the use of
technology to staff involved in facilitating XR adoption.

Planning and organisation

• Provide direction to Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust in the
promotion, understanding, managing, researching, support or application of
digital interventions and technologies
• Assist in the development and facilitation of innovation projects by taking and
interpreting briefs from both team lead and interfacing independently with
relevant staff groups.
• Assist with monitoring project progress and working towards deadlines
• Attend and contribute to NHSE & South West TEL group sessions on behalf of Trust digital
team.
• Maintain, update and prepare devices, prior to going out to departments/staff, to
ensure smooth rollout of application
• Maintain own calendar and schedule that compliments and supports the learning
technologies team.
• Actively keep abreast of developments within the digital landscape


Responsibility and accountability

• Works alongside the Digital Innovation Lead & digital content teams, with
autonomy to work on and complete projects to deadlines that have clear
milestones.
• Responsible for delivering projects to agreed timescales and supporting other
Innovation projects where required
• Design, produce, test and deliver effective digital outcomes using industry standard tools (Unreal Engine, Unity, 3D Vista)
• Provides advice, guidance, encouragement and support on the use of
technology and created applications to staff involved in utilising products
• Ensures regular communication with team around workload and any conflicting
priorities
• Supported by senior members of the team whilst undertaking any additional
learning to support role.
• Be aware of Trust priorities and help support our vision as the Trust as a digital
health trailblazer.
• Support the development of any apprenticeship roles within the team


Policy and service responsibility

• Makes recommendations to the Digital Education Lead in relation to overarching
service processes.
• Requires awareness and understanding of Trust policies and values for interacting
and representing digital team within the role.
• Be respectful and sensitive towards intellectual insight and intellectual property
that the role may be exposed to working on certain projects and within the R&D
aspect of the wider digital team
• Positively promote the work of the Trust with external clients, stakeholders and
partners
• Responsible for digital equipment and software licenses used to fulfil the role.


Responsibility for finance, equipment and other resources

• Assist the Digital Education Lead to cost project activity (where applicable) and
make recommendations on equipment, software & technical infrastructure for the
service to remain functional.
• Responsible for facilitating access and correct operation of digital technologies as
part of the Digital Horizons team.
• Assist Digital Education Lead in constructing any business cases, supporting
documents or proposals for introducing new innovation products/hardware
• Does not have budgetary responsibility.


Responsibility for supervision, leadership and management

• Sensible approach towards recording own work load and work times for manager.
• The post holder will be will be required to show initiative and ability to make
progress on projects independently, but with regular catch ups and oversight from
lead.
• The post holder will be required to support new starters and
apprentices joining the team, through skills and knowledge exchange as well as
supporting admin tasks.
• The post holder will be proactive and keen to help shape the future direct and
theme of the digital health service, with genuine opportunity for growth and
innovative thinking.


Information technology and administrative duties

• Looking after own IT and digital equipment
• Recording working hours, calendar, achievements and outcomes (basic analysis of
the effectiveness of solutions based on end user evaluations)
• Looking after software licenses specific for the role & identifying additional tools
which could improve the service
• Proficiency of using core digital production software (Unreal Engine, Unity, Xcode, Arduino, etc)
• Keep abreast of new and emerging digital technology
