Job overview

Podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the human foot. In Torbay and South Devon the following podiatry services are available:

  • Foot health education for patients and carers
  • Courses of treatment for painful foot problems
  • Episodes of care and review of people with at-risk feet
  • Treatment of developmental foot abnormalities
  • Toe nail surgery
  • Wound care

As an Apprentice Podiatry Assistant Practitioner you will provide assessment, treatment and interventions for our  caseload within Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, and will work with a range of clinics across Torbay and South Devon.

Should you be successful in the recruitment and selection process, you will initially commence employment  on a Fixed Term 24 month contract at NHS AfC Band 3 with the view to progress to a permanent Band 4  member of our workforce, subject to evidence of successful competencies and qualification(s).

 

Main duties of the job

  • To provide nail and skin care and education of patients as indicated in treatment plans formulated by a podiatrist
  • To provide clinical and clerical support and administration
  • To practice the principles and philosophy of individualised person centred patient care in accordance with Trust Policy, procedures and regulatory body’s guidelines
  • Deliver treatment/care including scalpel work within podiatry as specified in a written care plan, under the guidance of a podiatrist
  • To undertake diabetic foot screening, vascular and neurological foot checks including ABPI and TBPI
  • To fit insoles, deliver shockwave therapy and undertake foot posture index test
  • To apply dressings as directed by the podiatrist
  • To undertake swabs as directed by the podiatrist

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To undertake a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care
  • To provide management, treatment and foot health education for people with foot care problems in a clinical and domiciliary setting following assessment by a podiatrist
  • To work independently, providing support, care, treatment and advice to individuals, within guidelines and protocols identified for the role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3
  • Maths and English grade c or above GCSE Or Functional Skills at level2
Desirable criteria
  • Foundation degree in health care

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • previous experience in health care/feet
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own workload
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of departmental and Trust policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Previous orthotic experience
  • Good understanding of health and safety measures
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Relevant experience in treating the foot, ankle and lower limb debridement of corns callus, neurological and vascular foot assessment
  • Previous experience in healthcare and foot care
