Trainee Breast Care Assistant Practitioner

Job overview

The Breast Care Unit are recruiting for a Breast Care Assistant Practitioner to join our integrated multi-disciplinary team working 30 hours per week as a Band 3 trainee, with the view to become a Band 4 Assistant Practitioner pending evidence of satisfactory competencies and qualifications.

You will  implement nursing care in the outpatient setting, and complete specifically designed breast care competencies and receive specialist training, with internally designed theatre competencies to enable you to assist the breast surgeon in theatre.

You will keep patients and relatives informed of their condition within boundaries of own competency, and you will participate in responding to feedback and reporting to Line Manager any action taken or action to be taken. Elsewhere, you will take part in MDT, Unit meetings and teaching sessions as well as performing handovers between clinic, wards and colleagues.

Main duties of the job

  • Complete specifically designed breast care competencies.
  • Receive specialist training with internally designed theatre competencies to enable them to assist the breast surgeon in theatre.
  • Support the BCN and clinical psychologist in the moving on group by providing education to a group of breast cancer patients undertaking the rehabilitation programme.
  • Provide breast awareness to public/patients and staff as part of our education and screening programme
  • Assist the Breast Care Nurses to effectively run the breast reconstruction service
  • Be responsible for training HCAs and trainee assistant practitioners, supporting bank staff, and student nurses/medics.
  • Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing care of individual patients whilst undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Supervises trainee assistant practitioners, bank staff and HCAs.
  • Receive psychology training to support them to signposts out patients, and be able to access clinical supervision at their request.
  • Be able to assess patient’s needs and to provide clinical advice within guidelines and protocols.
  • Be trained in Agresso and oversee the current stock process, and provide appraisals to the HCA’s.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Foundation Degree Healthcare Practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as a B4 assistant practitioner. Previous experience in oncology and/or surgery

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continued academic and clinical development.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrates knowledge specific to breast care surgery and wound care.
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the breast and related diseases.
  • Breaking Bad News training.
