Job overview

Due to an internal promotion, a Finance Assistant position is available in the Management Accounts department. The successful applicant will join a dynamic and forward-thinking team where we are keen to develop our staff and support them in maximising their potential.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high quality level of support to the Management Accountants, Senior Management Accountants and Finance Business Managers.
  • Responsible for ensuring that financial information is processed into the finance ledger in accordance with procedures and accounting timetables, leading to the provision of information for monthly reporting and statutory returns. Ensuring financial information is processed in accordance with deadlines and procedures including pre-determined budgetary limits.
  • As required, investigating financial enquiries, and providing assistance and advice to budget holders.

As a Finance Support Assistant, you will be joining the existing team providing a management accounts service to budget holders across the Trust.

The post will be based at Regent House in Torquay, working Monday to Friday

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assisting with the preparation and development of monthly management accounts from the general ledger system, ensuring data is reconciled and updated prior to being reviewed by the senior finance team and issued to budget holders.
  • Ability to be able to discuss complex and sensitive financial information to finance and non-finance colleagues in an understandable fashion requiring tact and persuasive skills.
  • Ability to be able to develop strong rapports within the Management Accounting Team, with external suppliers and with Budget Holders
  • Liaise with the Systems, Procurement and Payments departments as necessary when supporting analysis of spend, coding of supplier invoices, including correct VAT coding, and updating of Agresso budget holder information.

Essential criteria
  • • Association of Accounting Technicians – Level 3 (or equivalent knowledge and experience)
  • • GCSE Mathematics and English Level 4 or above.
  • • Proven general finance experience, and an understanding of accounting processes.
  • • Strong communication and inter-personal skills.
  • • Experience of Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Teams.
  • • Ability to be able to create and manipulate complex data files.
  • • Ability to be able to deal with incoming information in a confidential and sensitive manner.
  • • Good organisation skills and an ability to work under pressure to achieve tight deadlines whilst maintaining a high level of work.
  • • Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills with an ability to explain financial issues to non-financial budget holders.
Desirable criteria
  • • Association of Accounting Technicians – Level 4
  • • Knowledge of accounting processes and procedures within an NHS finance department.
  • • Experience of Unit 4 Financial Systems
