An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Medical Physics Specialist Technician to join the evolving Radiotherapy Physics Team at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, Medical Physics Department.

You will be joining an enthusiastic, dedicated and friendly team focused on improving patient-centred care,  working within the specialist areas of Radiotherapy, Ultrasound,, supporting and maintaining medical device equipment across the Trust and associated activities for the effective operation of Medical Physics IT Networks. 

You will also be required to work with other members across the South, East and North Devon (SEND) Medical Physics teams in undertaking routine quality control work on the equipment outside normal working hours when necessary.

The post holder will be responsible for the commissioning, maintenance & repair of a wide spectrum of highly complex diagnostic and therapeutic equipment throughout the South-East and North Devon network (SEND).

The post holder will work within the specialist area of (a) Radiotherapy and (b) Ultrasound for medical device maintenance & support including advice to clinical users in the delivery of a high-quality service.

The post holder will acquire the knowledge of Radiotherapy equipment (linear accelerator) in order to participate in their maintenance, repair, and QA operations.

The post holder assists in the maintenance repair and associated activities for the effective operation of our radiotherapy physics IT Networks. 

The post holder will contribute with providing highly specialist professional advice, oversight and guidance to TSD on all aspects of Medical Devices Management. The post holder works with key stakeholders to ensure compliance to policies, statutory legislation, and national guidelines.

The post holder is responsible for initiating, writing, reviewing, developing, and implementing related procedures, ensuring compliance with statutory legislation, national guidelines and ISO9001 quality system.

To provide  technical expertise for the Radiotherapy Physics Engineering Service (RTPES) ensuring support is available as required.

Help with the maintenance of Radiotherapy treatment machines which meets manufacturer's recommendations and/or local policies and procedures.

Provide engineering support to Radiotherapy treatment machines to ensure that all queries and breakdowns are responded to promptly and dealt with effectively.

Assists in ensuring that all Radiotherapy machines are clinically available as required to maintain a safe and effective radiotherapy service.

Assists with routine machine quality control (6:30am - 8.30am) according to set protocols agreed by lead physicist for machine QA.

Contribute to the QA and commissioning of Ultrasound devices both locally and externally as required.

Assist the Senior and Chief Radiotherapy Physics engineer with the maintenance, development and repair of our Radiotherapy Physics (RTP) IT infrastructure.

Understands the operator role under IRR99. Contributes to the radiation safety of staff and public ensuring adequate testing of safety interlocks on Radiotherapy Linacs.

Following a competency assessment, adopts the role and responsibilities of an "Operator" as set out in the IR(ME)R (ref: Medical & Dental Guidance Notes).

Act with professionalism and integrity - being a role model for those around you.

Demonstrates empathy and tact when communicating with patients, carers and staff.

Contribute with solutions to medical device support/problems and is able to demonstrate a positive approach to new challenges.

Maintains clear and detailed records of all work undertaken in the medical devices management system.

Be honest and learn from mistakes. Help to create a 'no blame' culture where people feel able to share and learn from experiences.

Enhance patient safety by ensuring medical devices under the remit of Medical Physics are supported, maintained and repaired in line with department procedures and manufactures guidance.

Undertaking acceptance and commissioning tests on new and loan equipment under the remit of Medical Physics.

Works with autonomy as well as part of a team and is responsible for own actions.

Writes, reviews, develop and implement equipment support procedures, ensuring compliance with statutory legislation and broad national guidelines.

Helps to develop and foster a positive learning environment where feedback is welcome and valued.

Qualifications and Training

  • Professional knowledge acquired through HND/BSc/BEng or equivalent in electronics or equivalent subject + specialist knowledge acquired through diploma, device training to specialist equivalent level
  • Evidence of CPD

  • QCF(NVQ) level 4/5 diploma qualification in management
  • Registered with IPEM Clinical Technologists (RCT)
  • Relevant manufacturers training courses
  • Experience of maintaining, repairing and servicing medical devices
  • Be part of or be working towards registration as a Clinical Technologists (RCT) or other professional registration scheme within technology

Knowledge and Experience

  • Evidence of substantial experience working at a professional level to gain specialist knowledge & experience with medical or laboratory devices fault finding, repair & maintenance
  • Substantial experience in an active role with planning, implementing and managing schedule/routine maintenance of medical/laboratory devices
  • In-depth knowledge of all areas of medical or laboratory equipment maintenance, management & technical support
  • Knowledge of a broad spectrum of electronic engineering principles and practical applications
  • Sound knowledge & very good understanding of mechanical engineering principles
  • Proven ability to logically diagnose component and system faults on patient critical medical equipment
  • Demonstrable proficiency of Microsoft Office and good understanding of IT networks infrastructure
  • Highly skilled, knowledge and significant experience in working with designing, implementation and delivery of medical/ laboratory device procedures, device performance/calibration procedures and producing technical evaluation reports.
  • Understanding of patient safety issues with the use of medical devices
  • Proven comprehensive specialist knowledge of BS EN 60601 BSI Standard for Electrical Safety of Medical Equipment

  • Knowledge of the field of Radiotherapy
  • Working knowledge of NHS clinical procedures, clinical practice, regulations, legislation and codes of practice, health and safety legislation and trust policies procedures and standing financial instructions.
  • Knowledge and experience of computer programming languages
  • Basic knowledge of Radiotherapy equipment including RF Generation. HT Generation, High Vacuum Systems
  • Experience with asset database management and specialist database report writing
  • Awareness of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines e.g. IRR/IR(ME)R,
  • Proven comprehensive specialist knowledge of ISO 9001:2015BSI Standard for Quality Management Systems.
  • Proven competence in supervisory and training roles in Radiotherapy engineering
  • Good understanding of computer hardware digital connectivity and digital cyber security impacting medical device technology
