Job overview

As part of the dispensary team you will perform a range of dispensary-based
activities including inpatient, outpatient and discharge prescriptions.

About your new team and department
The post holder will predominantly be based in the dispensary team contributing  towards delivering a comprehensive pharmacy service to the acute hospital wards,  community hospitals and other patient settings.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Dispensing discharge prescriptions and inpatient mediciation
  •  Answer routine queries and resolve straightforward problems from patients and wards / specialties e.g. availability of medicines.
  • Perform daily counts on specified lines as part of the departmental rolling stock take process. Check items have not exceeded their expiry date. Report any discrepancies to the Dispensary Manager.
  •   Maintain stocks in the Dispensary by putting away goods ordered by pharmacy Purchasing service.
  •  Replenish packaging materials required for dispensing process e.g. bottles, cartons, bags and other sundries.
  •  When required by the Dispensary Manager, cover the essential duties in the reception area, including receipt of prescriptions and forwarding of electronic, fax and postal requests to the appropriate sections.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Dispensary duties: dispense medicines for in-patients and patients on discharge and undertake related dispensary duties.

Dispense medicines for in-patients and patients on discharge, under the general direction of a Pharmacy Technician; including supply of controlled drugs, ensuring maintenance of associated records, in accordance with standard operating procedures.

You will liaise with pharmacy purchasing service about the availability of out-of-stock medicines / pharmaceutical sundries to ensure the completion of outstanding prescriptions.

Provide patients, patients’ representatives, staff and other people who visit or telephone the Pharmacy Department with an efficient and co-operative service by responding directly to their needs or, if necessary, referring to appropriate member of staff.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Good general standard of education; Grade C or above at GCSE in English and Mathematics
  • Ability to undertake NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent dispensing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Grade C or above in other subjects, including sciences
  • Experience to NVQ Level 3 competency or equivalent (in-house competency package assesses these skills)

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of the NHS and the role of Pharmacy
  • Understanding of Health & Safety Legislation and Risk Management
  • Experience of healthcare provision
  • Experience of hospital pharmacy
  • Pharmacy experience, including dispensing in hospital or community pharmacy
