Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist to join a dedicated team in a modern department, providing a high-quality service and will take on a leadership role for Mohs & training

The successful applicant must have knowledge of IT, dissection, teaching and mentor skills and appropriate routine laboratory skills including, frozen section work, special staining techniques, embedding  and microtomy. Quality Control, microscopy trouble shooting skills is essential to the role. Must be able to communicate effectively with all grades of staff, providing both leadership, training and mentoring.

Applicants must have completed the IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma or hold an MSC. Consideration will be given to candidates nearing completion of post graduate qualifications

University Hospitals Dorset Cellular Pathology department has a high quality UKAS accreditation record and it is an approved laboratory for Registration and Specialist training by the IBMS.

The Cellular Pathology team is made up of different grades of Scientist, including Medical laboratory staff, associate practitioners and biomedical scientists the aim being putting the patient first and delivering a high-quality service

The role is fulltime, and you will be required to work 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role will be to act as lead for training and Mohs and supervise  the day to day activities of the department, liaising with other senior staff to ensure that requests are met according to agreed policies and procedures. Knowledge of quality management is essential to maintain the departments UKAS accreditation. Other duties include staff training, mentoring, troubleshooting and dissection

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist MSc or Higher Specialist Diploma or near completion
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma of expert practice in dissection National recognised qualification in quality

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 2 years post graduate experience
  • Considerable experience of all relevant laboratory procedures
  • Participation in Continued Professional Development – To maintain up to date knowledge of new developments, concepts and techniques in cellular pathology by reading current literature, attending relevant courses and networking

Technical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent computer skills – knowledge of common IT and hospital systems
  • Highly developed practical and interpretive skills at bench level
  • Excellent communication and motivational skills
  • Highly skilled in the day-to-day organisation of work area
  • Highly skilled in the supervision and training of less qualified staff
  • Committed to acquiring new skills in response to a changing work environment

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of practical and theoretical histopathology technique
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant Trust, Directorate and departmental H&S, Standard Operating Procedures and COSHH
  • Thorough understanding of equal opportunities act, recruitment and selection technique and appraisal skills.
  • Good knowledge of Quality Management
