We are looking for Nurses or ODPs to join our team as Surgical First Assistants As part of our professional, friendly, and compassionate team you will do everything you can to ensure the patients treatment is of the highest standard. Our focus always is on ensuring that our patients receive high quality treatment in safe, clean, and comfortable surroundings.

We are currently recruiting for a Surgical First Assistant who will be part of a team of Surgical First Assistants at Dorset County Hospital Theatres. . You will be part of our energetic, friendly and close-knit theatre team and you must be able to work shifts to cover the service need, up to seven days a week.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide skilled specialist assistance in the delivery of high quality, cost effective patient care throughout the Operating Department.
  • To participate as an integral member of the theatre team giving leadership and guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Participate in the  Emergency Theatre Co-ordinator rota when required.
  • Please note that Theatres is a 24 hour/ 7 day per week service and the post will be expected to work nights and weekends.

Person specification

Education, Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered General Nurse or NVQ Level III Operating Department Practitioner
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • SFA qualification or working towards
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised Teaching course/qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Involvement in staff development/training with evidence of proactive teaching/assessing.
  • Extensive relevant experience in Theatres
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team leadership.

Skills, Abilities & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ability to practice as a current, competent and proficient practitioner.
  • Demonstrates awareness of necessity to maintain service with due regard to financial constraints.
  • Demonstrates evidence of an ability to manage time effectively in a flexible and adaptable manner.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to assist in establishing systems to support this process.
  • Demonstrates evidence of an area of special interest and maintains innovative/proactive attitude to practice development, with due regard to process of change.
  • Demonstrates ability to work under pressure and utilise problem solving skills to deal with unpredictable service requirements.
  • Demonstrates awareness of personnel management issues/skills and responsibilities, and critical appraisal skills.
