Consultant Mammographer

Band 8c

As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.

We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £250m estates programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.

We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming and productive place to work.

We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.

At UHD our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.

As a Trust we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.

Job overview

The Dorset Breast Screening Unit (DBSU) as part of the University Hospital Dorset Trust screens approximately 43,000 women per year as part of the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme. The Trust also provides symptomatic services based at Poole and the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital’s. The unit is fully digital with eight mammography units (three being mobile), four having tomosynthesis.

We are currently looking for a Consultant Breast Radiographer and would welcome applications from experienced Consultant radiographers and practitioners working towards that level who have at least two elements of advanced practice. Training will be given for the right candidate to achieve Consultant Radiographer status in Breast Imaging and achieving an MSc. Banding would be dependent upon training required and experience (Band 8a or b at trainee level, band c on qualification and completion of probation period where required).

Base Location: Poole Hospital

Interview Date: TBC

Main duties of the job

The Consultant Radiographer/trainee will be a key member of the multi-disciplinary team and provide a specialist opinion for Breast Imaging. This will include film reading, ultrasound, and biopsy and ultimately they will be responsible for their own assessment and symptomatic breast clinics at both Poole and The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals.

Consultant practice is already fully integrated into the service with four current Consultant radiographers in post. They provide expert professional advice to other professionals, multi-disciplinary groups and patients. The department is a forward thinking one which has always encouraged advanced practice. We currently have a team of advanced practitioners in various specialties who contribute to the development of the Breast Imaging Services in the Trust. We are actively involved in a wide range of research projects, both locally and nationally and have a partnership with a local University offering teaching on their Breast MSc pathway.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and service-focused individual, willing to work with a wide range of disciplines and professionals at all levels within the organisations. Full details of the role can be found in the job description and person specification documents, including an example job plan.
