Consultant in Gastroenterology

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

As University Hospitals Dorset we are a three site acute trust with ‘university hospital’ status through our partnership with Bournemouth University, working with an annual budget of £730m.

We offer highly regarded health services, employing some 10,000 staff. Our ambitious £250m estates programme is well on the way to delivering state-of-the-art facilities over the next two years to meet the current and future healthcare needs of the populations we serve.

In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with over seven miles of sandy beaches you’ll find inspirational opportunities to achieve your perfect work/life balance. With the New Forest and the Purbecks on our doorstep, we’re also less than three hours from London by road or train. The thriving towns of Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch give way to idyllic villages and unspoilt landscapes just minutes from our hospitals.

We believe that having a diverse workforce, and allowing people to be themselves, is essential in ensuring we offer an inclusive, welcoming and productive place to work.

We especially welcome applications from minority groups in the community who may be underrepresented in our workforce.

At UHD our active staff network groups are the Women's Network, Black Asian Minority Ethnic Group (BAME), Pride Network, European (EU), Pro Ability Staff Network, and the Armed Forces Support Group.

As a Trust we are proudly signed up to the Disability Confident and Armed Forces Covenant guaranteed interview schemes.

Job overview

TWO NEW PERMANENT FULL-TIME (10PA) POSTS

Directorates of Medicine University Hospitals Dorset (both RBCH and PGH sites)

We are looking to appoint 2 new colleagues to the Gastroenterology Department at University Hospitals Dorset, resulting from the merger between the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) and Poole General Hospital (PGH.)

These are new permanent posts for two full-time (10PA with option of 11th)  consultants gastroenterologists, though applicants wishing to work flexibly or less than full-time will be considered.  Sub-specialist interests such as hepatology, IBD or nutrition would be desirable but not essential and any sub-specialty interest would be considered. ERCP/EUS is not required for these posts. It is essential that any applicant is highly competent and independent in therapeutic endoscopic management of GI bleeding and able to manage a wide variety of complex inpatient gastroenterology. Accreditation in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology is essential.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will be joining a team of 8 Consultants at the PGH site and 15 consultants at the RBH site with a wide range of specialist interests including IBD, hepatology, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. There are also 3 middle-grade staff, 7 WTE IBD nurses, 5 WTE liver nurses, 2 WTE Iron deficiency anaemia nurses and one WTE research nurse.

Dorset is in the process of a major reconfiguration of Hospital services following the outcome of the fundamental Clinical Services Review. This recommended the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) as the Major Emergency Hospital for East Dorset with Poole General Hospital (PGH) being the planned care centre. The merger of PGH and RBH created University Hospitals Dorset (UHD) NHS Foundation Trust in October 2020.

The merged gastroenterology department is one of the largest units in the South of England with high volume endoscopy well in excess of 25,000 procedures per annum, including specialist complex endoscopy. The merged unit will also allow for greater development of sub-specialty interests, whilst maintaining skills and expertise in general gastroenterology. Joining the department offers an exciting and unique opportunity to be involved in the re-design of gastroenterology services in one of the largest gastroenterology units on the South Coast.

Working for our organisation

Our values define who we are as #TeamUHD.  They underpin everything we do now and in the future. They define how we treat our patients, visitors, and each other, our valued teammates and colleagues.

UHD are investing in services across the Trust, with many being transformed and developed following merger and the New Hospital Programme.

This means that some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or long term.  Recruiting Managers interviewing for this role will be happy to answer any specific questions that you have at interview.

There is a planned move of this service expected during 2025 as part of our Transformation Programme – this role and base of work will relocate to cross site, Bournemouth and Poole Hospital.  Upon transfer, excess mileage allowance/ reimbursement will not apply for this change, and any travel between the postholder’s home and work base will be classified as a commute. Any other changes unrelated to this, will be handled in line with National terms and conditions.
