With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job overview

To provide a high level of clinical care within the Community Dental Service supporting the Clinical Lead/Consultant in Special Care Dentistry,  Paediatric Dental Consultant, Senior Dental Officer, Dental Core Trainee and Dental Therapist in all aspects of clinical practice.

To provide support for patients both children and adults with special and complex needs including those with challenging behaviour and complex medical histories.

Duties for the Dental Nurse within the service include assisting in the provision of treatment with Inhalation Sedation, General Anaesthetic sessions, General Anaesthetic Assessments clinic, Bariatric clinic’s, special school screening and epidemiology.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited from an enthusiastic and conscientious qualified Dental Nurse to join our professional team on a full-time basis in providing a patient focused, special care dental service across the Tees Valley area.

The Community Dental Service provides dental care for people of all ages, including adults and children with special needs and those who require specialist care or facilities, throughout the whole of the Tees Valley.  A caring and empathetic manner is essential.

You would play a key part in assisting our Dental Officers in the management and treatment of patients with various special needs within both community and hospital settings across Teesside.  An induction package into the service will be provided.

Full registration with the General Dental Council is essential.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • NEBDN Diploma in Dental Nursing or another nationally recognised dental qualification
  • Registered with the General Dental Council and the British Association of Dental Nurses
  • Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing or a willingness to work towards it
  • Clinical knowledge continuously up to date
Desirable criteria
  • Extended skills qualification e.g. NEBDN Special Care Dental Nursing NEBDN Dental Radiography
  • NEBDN Fluoride Varnish Application
  • NEBDN Oral Health Education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in Dental clinics
  • Evidenced CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a community setting
  • Experience of assisting during sedation and general anesthetics
  • Participation in clinical audits. Immediate Life Support and Paediatric Life Support

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of all dental procedures
  • An understanding of clinical audit
  • An understanding of the basic principles of oral health education
  • Understanding of patients with special requirements receiving dental care
Desirable criteria
  • CDS Screening or oral health education procedures
