Job overview

We are looking for a compassionate psychologist (clinical/counselling/ forensic) to join us at Tees Intensive Community and Liaison Service (ICLS), within the Mental Health Services for Older People Directorate.  The post would suit an enthusiastic Psychologist, valuing the opportunity to work collaboratively with members of an innovative and established multi-disciplinary team, with significant opportunities to develop the role of psychology in older adults care home settings and intensive support contexts.

In addition to being part of an MDT, MHSOP offers the opportunity to be part of a psychology team. In addition to our clinical work there are opportunities to engage in research projects and the department has strong links with the Teesside Doctoral training course with regular opportunities to work with core, specialist and research trainees.

The salary is dependent upon experience, we are keen to hear from those interesting in either a Band 8a post, or Band 7-8a preceptorship. 

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be joining a well-established Older Adult Intensive Community Liaison (ICLS) team.  The post will involve working in community, residential and nursing care settings within a supportive and collaborative multi-disciplinary team.  The post holder will provide specialist psychological assessment, formulation and interventions to older adults within care home settings, and brief psychological interventions to those receiving intensive short-term interventions living in either care homes or their own homes. A key part of this role will be using clinical leadership skills to influence teams to embed formulations, psychological understanding, and psychosocial interventions and governed psychological therapies in everyday practice.  There are significant opportunities to support workforce development through supervision, advice, consultation and training. 

Experience of working with older adults and their families and carers is important, as well as the ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team and with our multi-agency partner organisations. We are keen to support the ongoing development of Psychologists through training and CPD opportunities. The post holder will receive regular supportive supervision and there is a strong psychology network across older adult services and the service line. The service provides training placements and teaching for the local DClinPsy courses.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are willing to consider applications from Psychologists who do not yet meet the essential criteria for a Band 8a, but who would be interested in undertaking the post at a Band 7 initially, with a supportive plan for development and progression in due course.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate training (doctoral level equivalent) in clinical / counselling / forensic psychology (or its equivalent prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.
  • HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist
  • Trained in clinical supervision (within agreed timescale)
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Registration with BPS
  • Post-graduate qualification showing evidence of supervised practice in an evidence-based psychological therapeutic model

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working as a qualified applied psychologist within the designated service including a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and a range of clinical severity across a range of care settings.
  • Exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care as a care coordinator within the context of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Teaching, training and clinical supervision and field supervisor for doctoral theses.
  • Research and development
  • Quality and service improvement and evaluation.

  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and undertake care co-ordination/lead practitioner responsibilities
  • Undertake complex multiagency working and liaise with multiple systems
  • Utilise psychometric tests competently
  • Identify, provide and promote appropriate interventions / means of support for carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and challenging behaviours
  • Utilise appropriate clinical governance mechanisms within own work

  • Use multimedia materials for presentations in professional, academic and public settings.
