With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

The pathology departments at NTH and STH are working collaboratively to develop a joint service with services being delivered on both hospital sites. This will require cross site working as appropriate

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Healthcare Science Support Worker  to join the Pathology Laboratory at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS FT  in the Cellular Pathology Department.

Healthcare Science support workers  perform routine tasks in the laboratory supporting the work of the Biomedical Scientists and contribute to the efficient and effective running of the department. The post holders will be involved in data input and will also participate in specimen preparation e.g. checking patient and sample details correspond and performing manual tasks to protocols, “house-keeping” duties, stock control and record keeping..

The department operates between 07.00 - 18.00. Monday to Friday and  the post holder is expected to work flexibly within these hours,. 

Full training in all aspects of the job will be provided in house in accordance with the department training policy and on successful completion of training the post holder will be given the opportunity to complete the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I.

The department has full UKAS accreditation and IBMS training approval. CPD is actively encouraged.

Main duties of the job

Main duties within the Cellular pathology department include

Undertake data entry tasks, inputting patient and specimen information into the pathology specific computer systems

Competently deal with all sample types received into the department including those which may carry transmissible infection risks and follow the appropriate protocols for handling such specimens

  Participate in the storing, retrieving and disposal of specimens and specimen records in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures

 Undertake “house-keeping” duties as necessary including cleaning, basic maintenance of equipment and support the maintenance of stock levels

 Support dispatch of samples to other laboratories which may have complex requirements

On a rotational basis, the post holder will carry out the role of MDT co-ordinator, where patient reports and specimens need to be collated in line with tight timescales.
