Main duties of the job
The Associate Director of Nursing for Professional Development and Practice Excellence will ensure that our nursing community are supported to utilise the opportunities on offer at pre and post registration. The post holder will lead the implementation of the part of our Nursing Plan that focusses on career pathways. There is an opportunity for the right person to make a substantial contribution to TEWV being a Great Place to work for our nurses.
We are looking for a positive and confident nurse leader who has significant experience of leading workforce development in the NHS and working with higher education institutions. The successful candidate will be competent to manage their own priorities and workload and will also be someone who wants to be apart of a leadership community who are focused on positive practice and making a difference.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Associate Director of Nursing Education and Professional Excellence is responsible for the strategic leadership of nursing education and development, workforce planning and support, and professional standards across the nursing and Nursing Associate workforce. They will ensure that the nursing and Nursing Associate workforce supports implementation of the Trust’s strategy, and is able to deliver national and local priorities that enhance the safety, experience and outcomes of people using our services. They will achieve this by:
- Setting, implementing and monitoring professional standards, underpinned by programmes of learning and development for nursing and health support staff
- Collaborating with strategic leaders to quantify and predict the current and future workforce needs, and working with NHSE, external education providers and the Trust’s People and Culture team to ensure provision of high quality, evidence-based programmes of education and development
- Attracting and retaining high calibre nursing and health support staff in sufficient numbers through the creation and delivery of a nursing career pathway
- Providing robust strategic leadership in delivery of the nursing plan overall, and specifically in setting and evaluating standards of nursing education, practice development and professional excellence.
In all the above the post holder will be expected to act independently, decisively and effectively within all portfolio areas and to be able to positively and creatively challenge current thinking in order to develop new and better policy and operational working practices.
The post-holder will work at all times to uphold the NMC Code – professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in a senior management role (at or above A4C band 8a ) to evidence use of strategic and operational management skills and thinking skills.
- Significant experience of being in operational1st or 2nd on call role out of normal working hours
- Significant experience in lead specialist role used for trust wide guidance or advice.
- Evidence of using mentoring, coaching and assessment knowledge and skills through implementation of the NMC Nurse Mentor and Assessor Role with preregistration learners.
- Knowledge and skill in investigation, review and data analysis through multiple experiences of investigation and governance review processes 2
- Skills in planning and developing research and audit projects using recognised methodology.
Desirable criteria
- Significant experience in a senior management role (at or above A4C band 8a) to evidence more application of strategic management skills and thinking skills
- Formal academic experience such as a teaching qualification, significant participation in research, or experience of developing or commissioning programmes of education
- Record of implementation /participation in regular R&D and audit activity
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Current nurse registration at 1st Level
- To be able to demonstrate analytical and intellectual skills, ability to gather and manipulate information at advanced level and ability to manage advanced levels of knowledge through: Masters academic qualification in a health or management related topic
- OR Masters l therapeutic qualification/registration in a therapeutic model relevant to mental health or learning disability
Desirable criteria
- In addition to demonstrating one of the essential academic qualifications ability to demonstrate knowledge of a model of mental health or learning disability therapy through post registration training and practice.
- Recognised module or qualification in Applied Research or Clinical Audit.
- To evidence advanced competency and knowledge of managing change though formal project management training and experience of implementation.
- Recognised qualification in First Line Financial Management - particularly Health.
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Recognised/accredited leadership development programme above A4C band 7 level
- Experiential learning supported by self directed study above A4C band 7 level
- Completion of an accredited qualification in a recognised theoretically based Quality Improvement System with evidence of implementation of learning
Desirable criteria
- Accreditation as leader in a Toyota Production Systems or Lean production improvement model
- 1st line financial management capability
- Use of statistical analysis software
