Job overview

We have a vacancy for a Band 5 Pharmacy Technician - Part time - 30 hours - Fixed term - 12 months. The post is based at Foss Park Hospital in York but will require regular travel to Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough and other locations across our area. 

We are looking for a General Pharmaceutical Council registered Pharmacy Technician with hospital medicines management experience and the enthusiasm, confidence and drive to make a real difference to the lives of patients with mental illness. Previous mental health experience isn't essential, but you will need to be a natural communicator who is full of energy and passionate about working with colleagues, patients and their carers.

Applicants must ensure that prior to applying they have agreement from their current line manager that they can be released on a secondment basis. In the event that permanent funding is secured for this post the successful applicant will be confirmed in post on a permanent basis.

Main duties of the job

Completing medication reconciliation on admission in line with standard operating procedures.  

Undertaking discharge medicine reconciliation to reduce the risk of any medicines management related problems during the discharge process and ensure the patient/carer fully understands how to take the medication. 

To co-ordinate the preparation of dispensed medications for inpatients and outpatients for discharge, leave, self-medication and organise the use of compliance aids as necessary,

To assess Patients Own Drugs (PODs) for use within the trust according to protocol (following completion of the relevant medicines management module and the trust competency framework)

Facilitating Clozapine clinic across the locality (following appropriate training and completion of trust competency assessment)

To support in the preparation and dispensing of medication and support dispensary processes as required.

Accuracy checking of dispensed medications.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 with BTEC underpinning knowledge in pharmaceutical sciences or equivalentt
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • NHS England Modules 1-4 (or regional equivalent) or willingness to commence within 12 months
  • Accredited Checking qualification or willingness to commence within 12 months
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma in clinical pharmacy services and therapeutics
  • Primary care pharmacy education pathway (PCPEP) NHS England Medicines Optimisation (Modules 5-7) or regional equivalent
  • CPPE The community pharmacy technician: Advancing your role programme
  • CPPE Mental Health
  • The Medicines Information and Advice Training Programme (MIATP) for pharmacy technicians (formerly UKMI)

Expereince

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of clinical pharmacy practice as a pharmacy technician
  • Hospital/Prison/GP experience which could include ward supply services, named patient ordering, patient counselling, patients own drugs assessment, medication history, medicines reconciliation, transfer/discharge reconciliation, medication administration
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of mental health pharmacy
  • Audit experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding the risks associated with medicines
Desirable criteria
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Teams, Powerpoint, Excel and Word
