Our two acute hospitals have emergency departments and provide 24 hour a day care, offering a comprehensive range of surgical, medical, outpatient and maternity services, supported by a full range of diagnostic and therapy services. Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

To provide a high quality and effective respiratory lung function service that provides robust technical reports and interpretation.

 

Responsible for the monitoring and performance of calibration and quality control procedures for all equipment. 

Responsible for working within a clinical governance framework in delivery of care.

Main duties of the job

 

1.    To be responsible for the daily operation of the lung function laboratory in accordance with clinical governance and waiting time requirements.  This includes accurately recording all activity in a timely fashion, and ensuring that results are uploaded onto the electronic patient record.

 

2.    To perform and interpret the following respiratory investigations in accordance with ARTP/BTS guidelines.

 

Ø  Spirometry and flow volume loops

Ø  Reversibility studies

Ø  Measurement of static lung volumes (via helium dilution and body plethysmography)

Ø   Single breath gas transfer

Ø  Field exercise tests

Ø  Hypoxic challenge tests

Ø  Respiratory muscle assessments SNIP, MIP, MEP

Ø  Capillary blood gas measurements

Ø  Overnight oximetry

Ø  Fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurements

 

3.    To keep up to date with best practice in lung function testing and update protocols and SOPs as required.

 

4.    The department comprises of two band 7 senior physiologists who are based at the Conquest Hospital and at Eastbourne DGH respectively supported by dedicated administration staff. We are currently in the process of recruiting a junior respiratory physiologist (Band 5). The post holder would be jointly responsible for their supervision, working together with our Senior Physiologists.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Clinical Physiology/Science or equivalent
  • Eligible for entry onto RCCP register or equivalent
  • Evidence of continued professional development to postgraduate diploma level or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development in relevant subject
Desirable criteria
  • Registered on the RCCP voluntary register
  • ARTP Part 1 and part 2 exams or equivalent
  • Evidence of continued relevant professional development to masters level or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a qualified respiratory physiologist, and the ability to independently and accurately perform and report on the full range of lung function tests
  • Experience of supervision / training of junior staff
Desirable criteria
  • Some experience of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Experience working in a large respiratory physiology department
