Are you interested in working with new mothers, supporting midwives to deliver high quality care? Then come and join us at University Hospitals Sussex

Due to internal promotions, maternity leave and staff commencing their midwifery training we have vacancies for Maternity Care Assistants to work within the Maternity Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton. The post involves working as part of a team under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives. This will be a rotational post working in all areas including the Delivery Suite and Delivery Suite Theatre, Postnatal Ward and Antenatal Department.

The work is very challenging and demanding, involving long shifts, night shifts and weekend work but is also enormously rewarding. You will be helping to provide care for women at an incredibly sensitive and emotional time and you will need to have good communication skills and demonstrate great sensitivity.

We would like to ensure that you are familiar with this exciting role and strongly recommend you read the job descriptionMaternity Care Assistants enjoy a career which offers opportunities for further development and training within their role. In addition, there are limited numbers of secondments available for exceptional individuals who excel in the maternity care to undertake midwifery training at Brighton University after completing a minimum service of one year at the Trust.

No professional qualifications are necessary however, you must possess good inter personal skills and an interest in maternal and child health and a willingness to help out in sometimes challenging situations.

Exposure prone procedures are carried out as part of this post. The successful applicant must submit proof of their current Hepatitis B status to the Trust

Applicants must be aware that this is a 24 hour 7 day a week service and in order to meet service requirements you will be called upon to work early, late, night and weekend shifts

 

General

 

  • Following appropriate training, assist in the delivery of care to women and their babies under the direction of a registered midwife.
  • Help to reinforce Health Education advice to women.
  • Respect the need for privacy and dignity.
  • Report any change in the condition of the mother and baby to the registered midwife.
  • Report all incidents, complaints, enquiries or accidents to the midwife in charge/Team leader.
  • Assist in the collection of maternity notes and any other administrative duties.
  • Answer telephone, door and patient call bells.
  • Ensure equipment is in a safe and clean condition, reporting defects to the midwife in charge.
  • Assist with the serving of patient meals and drinks.
  • Contribute to the welcoming atmosphere within the unit.
  • Adhere to Trust infection control policy.
  • Maintain high standards of personal appearance in accordance with Trust Uniform / Non uniform Policy.
  •  Input and retrieve administrative and clinical data into and from Trust I.T. systems in accordance with Trust policies and guidelines e.g. clinical histories, admission and discharges.
  • Collect and transport specimens.
  • Collect blood from Blood bank following Trust policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the stock levels are maintained.
  • Listen to hand over at beginning of shift.
  • Replace sharps boxes using safe general working practice.
  • Remove urinary catheter’s and cannula’s following appropriate training.
  • Empty catheter bags/bedpans and record output.
  • Undertake basic vital sign recordings e.g. Temperature. Pulse. B/P.
  • Assist mothers to maintain personal hygiene e.g. bed baths, showers etc.
  • Assist with the intra/inter departmental transfer of women and their babies.
  • Keep clean/tidy all areas on the ward e.g. sluice, rooms, store rooms etc.
  • Inform the bleep holder, theatre sister or ward manager when stock levels are depleted.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned on a regular basis and following use e.g. incubators, phototherapy equipment, suction machines, breast pumps, resuscitaire, cardiac arrest trolley etc.
  • Assist with keeping the ward generally tidy.
  • Assist the midwife with specific errands/tasks.
  • Contribute to raising awareness of public health issue e.g. smoking/passive smoking.
  • Reinforce professional advice through supporting and encouraging the mother in parenting skills in the first 10 days of baby’s life.
