Job overview

The Senior Research Nurse is an integral member of the Research and Innovation management team sharing responsibility for development and management of the service and their portfolio.

They will manage and oversee the portfolio of clinical studies relating, but not limited to Critical Care, Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, Pain Management, Surgery and Neurological Disorders at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, but there maybe a potential requirement for wider cross site working within UHSussex. The post holder will have expertise and experience in managing a team of nurses, coordinating clinical research, with good levels of clinical judgement, discretion and decision making in line with Good Clinical Practise, policies and frameworks.

They will be involved in the development of their portfolio working closely with the clinical and R&I teams to ensure that their portfolio reflects the R&I strategy and True North objectives.

Main duties of the job

The post holder in conjunction with the Principal Investigator and Lead Research Nurse, will manage, coordinate, and organise the timely delivery of research projects. Identifying potential barriers to recruitment and strategies to monitor effective use of resources and the timely delivery of research targets.

They will have experience in analysing new research studies and undertaking the feasibility process, in conjunction with the Principal Investigator and Lead Research Nurse, identifying capacity issues both within research and relevant service departments. The post holder will demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in their relation to the clinical, research and education responsibilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Provide professional and clinical leadership and ensure delivery of high quality care and clinical research.
  2. Coordinates complex research studies using expert clinical and research knowledge.
  3. Continually evaluates the quality of the care given, regularly assessing the needs of the patients/participants and effects change required to ensure their safety.
  4. In conjunction with the Principal Investigator and Lead Research Nurse/Nurse Manager, manages, coordinate, and organises the timely delivery of research projects. Identifying potential barriers to recruitment and strategies to monitor effective use of resources and the timely delivery of research targets.
  5. Manage an allocated team of clinical research nurses on a day-to-day basis, monitoring their performance in accordance with BSUH NHS Trust Individual Appraisal Programme.
  6. Act as professional lead, resource and role model providing advice and support to all staff working in the research area to promote best practice, including: medical students, nurses, and doctors.
  7. Actively support the clinical areas, R&I and the Trust in the provision of high quality, modern, dynamic and patient centred research in accordance with the Trusts True North programme and the R&I strategy.
  8. Deputises for Lead Research Nurse as required.

Person specification

Experience / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First degree in relevant subject
  • First level Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of specialist knowledge required for the portfolio and research
  • Previous Experience in Teaching and Assessing
  • Prior line management and experienced in supervising staff
Desirable criteria
  • Management/ Leadership course/qualification
