Job overview

We are looking for a person with excellent managerial and communication skills who is able to work effectively under pressure and can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of criminal law, CCTV control room operations and security incident management.

You will be leading existing security teams based in the busy environment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath. 

Hours of work  based on a 37.5 hour week, rostered duties will include weekends, nights and bank holidays. 

Security staff will be recruited in accordance with BS7858:2006.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to perform duties across all premises where University Hospital Sussex NHS Foundation Trust operate.  You must be capable of protecting staff, patient’s visitors and property and dealing with untoward incidents.  You will have experience of dealing with the public in a customer orientated environment and be of a calm, sympathetic nature whilst maintaining an authoritative manner. Some control room duties will be required.   

You will come into contact with difficult, aggressive and sometimes violent individuals. You will be given formal training in Conflict management & Physical Intervention Techniques.  A degree of physical and mental robustness is required.  If you have any doubts about your physical abilities or any health problems that will make you more liable to physical or mental harm you should consider carefully whether to apply. Applicants must have possessed a full, current, clean driving license for a minimum of 2 years. 

Essential requirements for this role are good communication skills, good understanding of written and spoken English, staying calm under pressure and being able to sustain lengthy periods of concentration. Full formal training will be provided but experience of working in Security and Control room settings would be advantageous as would experience of managing a small team of staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Manage the initial response to and protect Staff, Patients and Visitors from acts of violence and abuse.

Manage day to day activities to protect Trust property from crime and criminal activity. Work with the Security Supervisors to gather information regarding incidents including criminal cases are assist in ensuring they progressed appropriately, including attendance at Court where required.

Ensure Security incidents are investigated and reported in accordance with Trust Policy & Security Dept procedures.

Deal sensitively and in an empathetic manner with staff, visitors & patients who present with complex and highly emotive issues as a result of the wider impact of crime including violence and physical assaults.

Ensure that all NHS security work is carried out within the professional and ethical procedures of the Security Dept.

Manage the day to day arrangements for Traffic management & car parking facilities in order to maximise the availability of parking facilities for patients, visitors & staff.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Full UK Manual Driving Licence Cat: B
  • GCSE/Knowledge of English and Maths.
  • Level 2 National certificate for CCTV operators or relevant qualification or experience.
  • xperience within the Security Industry managing security and CCTV and access control systems.
  • Experience in conflict de-escalation
Desirable criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a leadership role.
  • ILM or relevant supervisor/junior management qualification.
  • SIA Level 2 Door Supervisor Licence.
  • Experience in Healthcare Security

Skills

  • Ability to write reports
  • Demonstrate competencies for planned and unplanned activity including emergencies
