Job overview

We are looking for Registered Nursing Associates to work within Chailey Clinical Services, supporting children and young adults with complex and fluctuating healthcare needs. 

Nursing Associates will be based as an employee within Chailey Clinical Services supporting and delivering a mixture of general and specific high quality, skilled care to children and young people (CYP) either in the school and residential bungalow settings or the short breaks team.

The post holder will become competent and proficient in their area of practice by undertaking competency assessments specific to their area of clinical practice. The Nursing Associate will be supervised by a Registered Nurse of band 5 or above. 

RSNT provides medical support to the residents and pupils at the Chailey Heritage Foundation (CHF) who have complex and fluctuating health needs. They support the school in its delivery of education through teaching and advising the CHF education and care staff in how to support a child with their learning and medical needs.

Bluebells provide short breaks to CYP which are pre-booked, but can also on occasion provide support for emergency placements.

Main duties of the job

  1. The Nursing Associate will deliver care within their proven competency as achieved during their Nursing Associate Training.
  2. Recognise changes in a patient’s condition and seeks assistance from a Registered Nurse of band 5 or above and/or paediatric consultant or GP as appropriate.
  3. Contribute to the planning, implementation and monitoring of patient care as part of the Chailey Clinical Services Nursing Teams.
  4. Using recognised assessment tools including PEWS, NEWS2, MUST and Purpose T to risk assess, record and act upon patients’ changing conditions.
  5. Treat and monitor patients under the leadership and direction of a registered nurse of band 5 or above.
  6. Monitor individualised care plan.
  7. Plan and implement non-complex tasks and interventions guided by standard operating procedures and competency achievement.
  8. Contribute to patient review, care planning and delivery of care for End of Life patients.
  9. Provide support, training and supervision to others.
  10. Maintain clear concise and legible documentation adhering to standards in accordance with NMC and Trust policies.

Working for our organisation

Chailey Clinical Services offers a range of interventions to children and young adults across the range of the multi-disciplinary team. You will be supported by the Practice Development Nurses to further develop your career and to learn skills and competencies.

We are located in the beautiful Sussex countryside at the foot of the South Downs about 30 mins drive from Brighton with the nearest mainline railway station at Haywards Heath. There is ample on-site parking; a café offering home style food with a daily changing menu; lots of outdoor space for outdoor activities and relaxing during a break; and a Children’s Farm attached to the co-located Chailey Heritage Foundation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. The Nursing Associate will deliver care within their proven competency as achieved during their Nursing Associate Training.
  2. They will be supported by the Registered Nursing Team and supervised by their appointed mentor who will be a registered nurse band 5 or above.
  3. Contribute to the planning, implementation and monitoring of patient care as part of the Chailey Clinical Services Nursing Teams.
  4. This role will include supervision and teaching of trainee or newly qualified Nursing Associates.
  5. Maintain at all times a kind, caring and professional attitude towards patients, relatives and colleagues within the clinical setting, taking into consideration dignity, privacy, and confidentiality, alongside cultural and religious need
  6. Recognise changes in a patient’s condition and seek assistance from a Registered Nurse / the medical team or a GP as appropriate. This will involve using recognised Assessment Tools such as PEWS, NEWS 2 and Purpose T to assess, record and act upon recognition of a deteriorating patient.
  7. Provide health and care information to the patient, carers and family as appropriate.
  8. Monitor and evaluate individual care plans
  9. Provide skilled paediatric nursing care and clinical interventions such as enteral feeding, oral / nasal suction, management of long term ventilation, catheterisation and seizure management to children and young people within school, residential bungalows or other applicable venues such as clinics.
  10. Maintain clear concise and legible documentation adhering to standards in accordance with NMC and Trust policies.
  11. Adhere to the Medicines Management Policy in the storing, administering, recording & disposal of medicines.
  12. To attend all mandatory and statutory training including infection prevention and control. The Trust is committed to delivering a higher standard of customer care and therefore it is compulsory to ensure that you have undergone induction training within three months of your appointment.
  13. Adhere to the Trusts Uniform Policy.
  14. Adhere to Trust and Local Lone Worker Policy and Procedures.

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nursing Associate on the NMC register
  • End point assessment completed successfully

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the scope of the role of the Nursing Associate in context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team and the organisation, and how the role may contribute to service development
  • Understanding of the importance of following procedures and treatment plans
  • Experience of caring for patients in a healthcare setting
  • Understands and acts in line with NMC professional standards for practice contained within The Code
  • Knowledge of when to seek advice and escalate to the appropriate professional for expert help and advice
  • Understand the requirements for NMC professional revalidation
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in the community
