Are you a qualified Paediatric Nurse with a minimum of 12 months post registration experience and looking for a new challenge?

We have an exciting opportunity for band 5 paediatric nurses to join our supportive and friendly team of fantastic paediatric nurses in the emergency department.

We are looking for nurses who are motivated, enthusiastic and who possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with the ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team within the fast paced environment of the Emergency Department, to join our friendly team in paediatric ED. We see approx. 12,000 children a year and that number is ever increasing.

We have recently relocated the paediatric emergency department and currently making it a welcoming space for our patients to be seen and treated.

We encourage our staff to undertake specific courses such as PILS, APLS, Mentorship, Stabilisation of the acutely unwell child as well as in house training such as venepuncture and cannulation. We have regular simulation training with the paediatric medical team. You will develop skills in resus and paediatric major’s patients, as well as minor injuries and illnesses.

Main duties of the job

To provide the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care as required within the Paediatric Emergency Department. To utilise a variety of strategies to communicate effectively with children and their family/carers, the MDT, other departments within the trust and pertinent agencies outside the organisation.

In order to deliver the above, you will require a general understanding and knowledge of children’s health needs including recent acute care experience. You may take responsibility for a specific area within the Emergency Department during a span of duty during absence of more senior staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care given to patients
  • Maintaining high standards of patient care
  • To acquire competency in basic nursing skills for ED
  • To liaise closely with social services, safeguarding team, site team and the children’s ward to ensure the safety and wellbeing of children seen in ED when required
  • To ensure the safety of patients in accordance with local and national safeguarding process
  • Be proactive in maintaining local and national Quality Indicators for ED
  • Ensure the accurate documentation of patient care in notes
  • To assist in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with local policy.
  • To maintain awareness of and comply with Trust policies and protocols at all times.
  • To work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team in order to achieve desired outcomes for patients and their families
  • To fulfil the role of the departmental triage nurse, utilising advanced skills of assessment, prioritisation, decision-making, risk management and communication skills.
  • To have responsibility for the security and maintenance of equipment belonging to the Emergency Department
  • Ensuring patient safety at all times
  • Never undertaking practice that you do not feel competent in
  • Respond to incidents and complaints as they arise, reporting to senior
  • Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • RN Child / RSCN
  • Minimum 12 months post qualification experience in an acute hospital setting
  • IV and oral drug administration
  • Experience with mental health presentation
  • Ability to prioritise workload (working in acute setting)
  • An understanding of professional issues relating to safeguarding
  • Demonstrates professional behaviour in line with NMC code
Desirable criteria
  • PILS
  • Previous ED experience
  • Evidence of further study
  • Plastering competency
