Job overview

The post is full time (37.5 hours per week with weekend, late shift and bank holiday working as per rota. Part-time hours/flexible working will be considered).

Working as member of the Dispensary pharmacy team providing a safe and effective service to a variety of patients within the hospital and outside units. Striving with the multidisciplinary team to resolve queries as they arise.

Supporting the operational team as and when required with a variety of tasks to ensure timely delivery of Pharmacy supplies.

Accuracy checking to support the dispensary workflow with a weekly rota checking slot.

Taking an up-to-date accurate medication history for all patients and working with the multidisciplinary team.

Newly registered (or soon to be qualified) Pharmacy Technicians will be considered.

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive pharmacy service to the patients of University Hospitals Sussex and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. 

Also, to provide the Pharmacy service to other local healthcare providers against negotiated contracts including agreed community services and units of the CCG and Sussex Ambulance Service. Services consist of provision of medicines, clinical services, aseptic preparation, medicines information, community services, drug purchasing and formulary, education and training and providing related drug usage and financial information. In addition, the Pharmacy provides a quality control service, under an MHRA Specials license, to a variety of customers over a wide area of the country.

To assist in the provision of a safe, efficient and effective pharmaceutical service, dispensing of in-patient and out-patient prescriptions. To dispense discharge summaries to wards and departments within the Trust and to assist in the medicines management service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Dispensary

•    To dispense in-patient and out-patient prescriptions and discharge summaries in accordance with departmental guidelines.
•    To resolve pharmaceutical issues around patient care and to refer to a dispensary pharmacist or ward pharmacist as appropriate.
•    To counsel patients on the correct use of their medicines.
•    To assist with the daily stock checks and specified items.
•    To ensure goods are stored under the appropriate conditions and stocks are rotated.
•    To evaluate returned pharmaceuticals from wards and departments for suitability to re-issue in line with departmental guidelines.
•    To ensure that adequate levels of consumable items used in the course of dispensing are available and to ‘top-up’ these items as necessary.
•    To respond appropriately to incoming telephone calls, patients, customers, visitors and other hospital staff attending the pharmacy.
•    To be responsible for tidiness of workplace areas.
•    To participate in local rota arrangements for covering late clinics and weekend and Bank Holiday duties.
•    To undertake any other appropriate duties as may be requested by your manager.

•    When accredited, to develop and participate in medicines reconciliation and Final Accuracy checking activities.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, BTEC Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with GPhC
  • Experience in Hospital /Community dispensary
Desirable criteria
  • Accredited Checking Technician Qualification
  • Accredited Medicines Reconciliation Qualification
  • Knowledge and experience of working in an aseptic unit
